Nest Protect review

Functional and far smarter than your old smoke detector, the Nest Protect is back -- minus the gesture recognition. But more work is still need to make the smart home truly brilliant.

Nest Protect review: a smoke detector for the smartphone generation

The Protect brings plenty of innovation to the staid world of smoke detectors, but the $99 price will be too steep for many people to swallow.

Remote control via a mobile app ; Clever uses of color notifications ; Sleek design

Expensive for a smoke detector

Nest Protect is the smoke/CO detector to beat

$129 is a lot for a smoke detector, but it's hard not to covet this smart, sharp-looking new device.

With boutique design, remote monitoring via mobile device, and the ability to wave off false alarms with your hand, the ; is the smoke/CO detector we never knew we wanted.

$129 is a lot to ask for a smoke/CO detector, even a connected one.

Nest brings crisp design and smart features -- connected and otherwise -- to the humble smoke detector. You don't absolutely need the Nest Protect, but it's fine to admit you want one.

Nest Protect

The well-designed but pricey Nest Protect is one of the smartest smoke and carbon monoxide detectors you'll find. You can monitor and manage it using a smartphone, and silence it with a wave of your hand.

Minimalist design. Intuitive light ring. Loud alarms. Remote monitoring.

Expensive. No text message or email alerts.

In addition to visual lighting effects the Protect uses a very loud beeping alarm and a female voice to broadcast alerts. The voice will tell you when there's a potential for dangerous smoke or CO levels (called a Head's-Up) and when there's an actual...

Nest Protect review

Smoke detectors are boring. They're not attractive, not fun to deal with, and probably came with the house or apartment when you moved in. They make themselves known when you're cooking and burn...

Looks really nice ; Smartphone features are convenient ; Voice alerts are more pleasant than beeps

Too expensive ; Advertised features don't always work

The Protect isn't a product for today, it's a smoke detector for the future

Nest Protect review

How do you make a smoke detector cool? It's hard, and more difficult still to glamorize a carbon monoxide detector. Under ideal circumstances, you'll never hear a peep out of either.

With boutique design, remote monitoring via mobile device, and the ability to wave off false alarms with your hand, the Nest Protect is the smoke/CO detector we never knew we wanted.

Nest Protect review: No-nonsense “smart” smoke and carbon-monoxide detection

The best smart smoke detector on the market is also the most expensive.

Clear and versatile alerts ; Dead-simple, foolproof app ; Works with a variety of other products if you have other Nest gear

Quite expensive, but not at the top of the market

Nest Protect Review: Best Smart Smoke Detector

At $100, the Nest Protect is one of the most expensive, but also one of the most comprehensive, of the smart smoke detectors we've tested. Not only does it pick up several types of fires, as well as carbon monoxide, but it also does the best job at...

Detects smoke, carbon monoxide ; Spoken alerts ; Links to other smart-home devices

Expensive

It's worth splurging to get the most comprehensive smart smoke detector.

This is the only smoke alarm that passed all our detection tests.

It lasts 10 years, but the warranty period only covers two years of that time.

Nest Protect is the best smoke alarm you can buy today. It’s easy to use, plus it has high compatibility, mobile notifications and more that make it an extraordinary product.
