Amazon Echo review: Betcha can’t buy just one of these voice-activated connected-home controllers

The Echo is so awesome you might want one in every room of your home.

Exceptional voice-recognition capabilities ; Very fast and extremely responsive ; Extremely versatile, offering music playback, connected-home control, weather and traffic reports, and much more ; Very good app support, plus an IFTTT channel

Inferior audio features compared to the least-expensive Sonos speaker ; Flash feature would benefit from additional news sources ; Can’t control Philips Hue lighting scenes

Amazon’s Echo is versatile and powerful; an terrific value all around.

Amazon Echo review: listen up

"Alexa, what's the weather today?" "ALEXA! What's the weather today?" "ALEXA WHAT IS THE WEATHER TODAY GODDAMMIT." "Right now, in New York it's 25 degrees with clear skies and sun. Today's forecast...

Fast and simple to interact with ; Impressive mic and hearing range ; Joke-telling game is strong

Way too finicky ; Sometimes Alexa just ignores you ; Needs a real ecosystem outside of Amazon

Few people an Echo in their home (although it could be a real boon for the disabled), but it is nonetheless an incredibly fun and useful gadget—especially if you have a connected lighting system. And with support for Philips Hue, Belkin WeMo, and Wink,...

Amazon Echo review: Betcha can’t buy just one of these voice-activated connected-home controllers

Amazon's Echo is the best voice-controlled product that I've seen at the consumer level. It's versatile, powerful, and amazingly quick to recognize your speech and then do something, whether that's answering a trivia question, playing music, giving you...

If I buy an Echo, I won’t take full advantage of its capabilities for a couple of reasons. First, my lighting system is already tied to my home-security system (Z-Wave systems can have only one master). Second, I’ve invested heavily in a Sonos audio...

Amazon Echo Review: I Just Spoke to the Future And It Listened

It only took me a few hours to get cozy with my new assistant. “Alexa,” I barked at the nine-inch black cylinder on my coffee table, “Shut up.” The lights on top of the cylinder went dark; the embarrassing 90s music playing from its speaker cut out....

Amazon Echo Review: "Alexa, why are you so cool and frustrating at the same time?" [Update]

Today we take a look at Amazon's latest hardware offering, the Echo, a small cylindrical device that listens for your commands and attempts to provide you with relevant information and music.

Why is Alexa Echo so cool and frustrating at the same? When it knows how to answer your question, the experience is like magic. When my wife decided to ask, "Alexa, what color is the dress?" and the response was, "The dress is blue and black," we both...

Review of the Amazon Echo

My wife was helping her boss plan a Silicon Valley trip when she asked me if I knew the distance between Mountain View and San Francisco. Normally, I would have opened my laptop and checked Google Maps. Instead, I spoke — "Alexa?" — and then asked the...

The Echo is like a newborn baby with much to learn but as yet little more than a cute plaything. Like a baby, Echo is also annoyingly anchored; if it could run on batteries, I could move it from room to room when necessary.
