Amazon Echo Show (2nd Gen) Review

With smart displays powered by Google now in play, the pressure was on for Amazon to make a better Echo Show device. There's no denying Amazon did it.

“With a bigger screen and stronger sound, the new Amazon Echo Show is better in every way.”

Amazon Echo Show (2018) review: Much-needed refinements

Amazon's latest Echo Show is a huge upgrade over the original. It has a more modern design, fantastic audio quality, comes with two built-in browsers and features step-by-step recipes; some even have video tutorials. It now has more robust...

Improved streamlined design Outstanding sound quality ; Supports NBC and Hulu (including Hulu Live) ; Built-in browser lets you watch YouTube ; Step-by-step recipes with video instructions

Display quality is only so-so ; Isn’t fully compatible with Nest Hello video doorbell ; Not compatible with YouTube TV

Amazon Echo Show (2nd Generation)

The latest model of the Amazon Alexa-powered Echo Show smart display is a major upgrade over the original, with a larger, more functional touch screen and a much more powerful speaker system.

Feature-rich touch-screen interface. Friendly design with big, bright screen. Powerful audio. Web browser.

Heavily sculpted sound emphasizes extremes and downplays midrange. Screen only supports 720p video.

Bottom Line: The latest model of the Amazon Alexa-powered Echo Show smart display is a major upgrade over the original, with a larger, more functional touch screen and a much more powerful speaker system.

Amazon Echo Show 2018 review: bigger screen and better sound aren’t enough

New screen, same Show

Much improved sound quality ; Bigger screen is much nicer to look at ; Design is more pleasing to the eye ; Software is more capable and easier to use

Still largely limited to Amazon services ; No hardware shutter to block the camera ; Screen-based skills are still lacking ; YouTube experience is laughably bad

At the end of the day, if I’m going to commit to having an always-on, internet-connected screen sitting on my countertop all the time, I want it to do more than the Echo Show.

Amazon's revamped smart display has bigger sound and better looks

Amazon's second-gen smart display still costs $230, but you'll get a much better looking and sounding device. Still, it's not the best option out there.

The second generation of the Echo Show brings a better and bigger display, fuller sound and YouTube via Firefox or Amazon Silk browsers.

There still aren't many useful or entertaining animations in common Alexa interactions.

If you like the idea of a smart display for cooking, calling or watching videos, the newest Echo Show is a great option. But don't expect any extras.

Amazon Echo Show 2nd Gen Review (2018): Alexa the screen star

The new Echo Show 2nd Gen finds a far more powerful Amazon Alexa waiting for it, with none of the touchscreen uncertainty of the original. Back when Amazon first launched the Echo Show, its first smart speaker with a display, few were convinced that...

Big, bright display is significantly larger than 1st Gen ; Great audio with plenty of bass ; Alexa's display-capable skills have improved considerably ; Smart home hub functionality is easy to use ; Price unchanged from original Echo Show

Smart hub functionality only covers the basics ; Browser feels a little half-baked ; Searching for recipes by voice is limited

Amazon Echo Show (2nd Gen) review: Better in every way, and better than every other smart display

It's a major step up, but Amazon still doesn't have the best smart speaker.

ZigBee smart home hub onboard ; Large, vibrant, higher-resolution display ; Vastly improved user interface

No Z-Wave support ; Not the best smart speaker for music

With its second-generation Echo Show, Amazon retakes the lead in smart displays, with across-the-board improvements compared to its first-generation product, and features like an integrated smart home hub and multi-room audio support that Google...

Amazon Echo Show (2nd Gen) Review: Better In Every Way

While still a bit confused about what it wants to be, the second Echo Show is a huge improvement over the first.

The Echo Show has become much, much more than just Alexa with a screen—it feels like a top-tier speaker, a miniature television, a smart-home hub and a sturdy tablet all in one. While I love using the thing, there’s still room for improvement....

Echo Show 2018 review: Seeing is believing, and there’s a lot more to see

Even YouTube makes an appearance on the new $229 Echo Show.

Bigger display than original Echo Show.

Screen transitions are a tad too slow.

Amazon needed time, and likely still needs time, to figure out how a touchscreen adds to the experience of using a voice assistant. But the new Echo Show is proof that the effort isn't futile.
