Google Nest Hub Max review: Sometimes bigger is better

The Google Nest Hub Max is a bigger, better Nest Hub meant more shared and communal spaces. The larger screen makes viewing photos and videos a treat, and the sound quality is improved as well. The 6.5-megapixel camera is used not just for video calls,...

Great display. Face Match facial recognition feature is pretty accurate. Ability to play and pause media with gestures. Can double as a Nest Cam. Very good sound quality. Fairly priced

Video calling only works with Google Duo. Gestures can be a little finicky.

Google Nest Hub Max review: The definitive smart display

The Nest Hub Max is meant to be the centerpiece of your home, a singular device that covers security, entertainment, home automation, and virtual assistance. Don't be fooled if it looks like other smart displays, however. There's more to Google's...

Plex Review

Capable free version ; Intuitive apps on many platforms ; Easy setup ; Growing library of on-demand and preprogrammed video streaming content

No HTPC support ; Lacks official interface themes

Plex's intuitive interfaces and comprehensive platform support make it an excellent option for setting up and maintaining a personal media server. An expanding library of free streaming content increases its appeal.

Review: Google Nest Hub Max

It's not until I became cooped up inside my New York apartment (thanks, coronavirus) that I realized a smart display is not a terrible companion to have in the home. I've been talking to Google Assistant the past four months through Google's 10-inch...

The 10-inch screen is a significant step up from the 7-inch Nest Hub. Good speakers for a smart display. Google Assistant remains the best voice assistant. No mandatory, annoying banner ads to try things (cough, Echo Show).

No night vision for the security camera and no physical privacy shutter. Unlike the Echo Show, it doesn't sync with Apple apps, such as Calendar and Apple Music. Google collects a lot of data about you.

After these four months, I'm increasingly happier with the Hub Max in my home, especially now that I'm stuck here 24/7. The 10-inch screen is its best feature, especially in the kitchen, as it's dead-simple to follow bread-making videos. The camera is...

Google Nest Hub Max review: The bigger Nest Hub isn't the better one

If you polled the dozen or so of us that make up the CNET Smart Home team, I think a majority would pick the Google Nest Hub as our smart display of choice. The attractive, fabric-bodied design looks right at place in a variety of settings around the...

The Nest Hub Max offers better sound quality, a bigger screen and a new camera with plenty of tricks. It's the first smart display you can control with gestures.

You can't cover the camera with a shutter. Using YouTube is a breeze, but other supported services are a pain. Many connections with third-party smart home gadgets are in limbo.

If you wish the Nest Hub was bigger, louder and had a camera, this is the Google Assistant for you. Otherwise, the regular-sized version and other, smaller smart displays are closer to the sweet spot.

Google Nest Hub Max Review: The Assistant will see you now

The Nest Hub Max isn't just a larger smart display, it's Google's first where the Assistant can see you, too. If the original Nest Hub was a connected digital photo frame that just so happened to have Assistant smarts baked in, the Nest Hub Max builds...

Bigger screen looks fantastic ; Audio much louder and clearer than Nest Hub ; Face Match works quickly and accurately ; Assistant keeps getting new features

No physical camera cover ; Limited to Duo for video calls ; Assistant UI doesn't make the most of the display

Google Nest Hub Max review: This surprisingly svelte smart display is a great cook’s companion

Capable of controlling your smart home gadgets while showing off your photos in style, the Nest Hub Max boasts robust sound and even a Nest camera.

Impressive audio quality ; Excels as a digital photo frame ; Built-in Nest camera ; Google Assistant is one of the smartest assistants we’ve tried

No physical camera shutter ; No analog audio output ; Google Assistant's smart home compatibility still lags Alexa (though it's catching up fast)

With onboard Google Assistant, easy-on-the-eyes Ambient EQ display technology, a built-in Nest camera, and impressive sound, the $230 Google Nest Hub Max makes for one of the most compelling smart displays we’ve tested. If you’re looking for a helpful,...
