Review: Second-generation Nest Thermostat zeroes in on perfection

Startup darling Nest Labs is already in the lead with its industry-reinventing Nest Learning Thermostat. Lindsey Turrentine goes hands-on with the second generation of the popular thermostat to find out how much the device has improved.

Easy to install and easy on the eyes, the ; learns your heating and cooling preferences over time, so you don't have to program it. Wi-Fi networking and tasteful apps let you control and monitor your Nest from afar. Saves money ... eventually.

At $250, the Nest is so very expensive, and large homes may need more than one.

The second generation of the energy-saving Nest Learning Thermostat puts this device even further ahead of the (nearly nonexistent) competition.

Nest Learning Thermostat

As a longtime homeowner I can honestly say that I've never given much thought to the lowly thermostat. I've installed two or three over the years and never paid more than $45 for a basic programmable model, and the last two I installed (more than ten...

Elegant design. Easy to install and setup. Well-designed Web/mobile apps

Pricey. Auto Away feature can kick in while you're home

The Nest Learning Thermostat is a must have for high-tech homeowners or anyone looking to save on heating and air conditioning costs through interactive programming and online management.

Nest Learning Thermostat review

Within a week of installing the first-generation Nest Learning Thermostat in my house last spring, I decided to buy my review unit rather than return it to the company. When a tech journalist pays $250 for a thermostat, you know it's a special kind of...

Nest Learning Thermostat: The Next Generation, review

The Nest may have been released for some time in America, but it has only recently released the UK in its 2nd generation design. We check it out and see if all of the hype was really worth it.

Features like Auto-Away and the Leaf make it simple to see how and where to save money too, and as I said in the review, as a household we have become more wary about how high a temperature we use at certain times of the day and no longer have the...

Review: Nest Learning Thermostat

It's hard to believe a device like the the Nest Learning Thermostat wasn't invented earlier; it blends existing hardware technology with customized software to solve a number simple of problems many people deal with on a daily basis, and does so...

Easy to install ; Don't have to get out of bed to adjust temperature ; Saves money

Every other app update seems to change the interface in ways that cause frustration.

Nest Thermostat Review: 6 Months With a Smart Thermostat

The Nest Thermostat is an easy to install effective way to efficiently heat a home or apartment.

Even after six months of use its tough to say if the Nest Learning Thermostat is saving on heating and cooling in a new house, but the leaf indicator, which shows up when the Nest sets the temperature at an energy saving level, is a nice motivator to...

Nest Learning Thermostat Installation Review & First Impressions

The Nest Learning Thermostat is simple to install and a joy to use after just a few days.

If you want to go hands on with the Nest, Lowes stores are now selling the Nest, and select stores now offer in store demo units. Not every local store has the Nest in stock, so you may need to order on Nest.com or Lowes.com .

Nest Learning Thermostat

The most stylish and intuitive smart thermostat to date.

Super industrial design ; Intuitive to use and setup ; Exceptional smart learning ; Excellent software support

Thermostat requires constant power connection ; Less granular control than Honeywell Evohome ; Can't control hot water

The other weakness is it can't control a separate hot water system, a feature Hive supports. This means it's best suited to households with a combi boiler.
