Samsung Gear S2 review

The Gear S3's release is imminent, but the S2 remains a beautiful piece of industrial design, and a decent smartwatch.

Even though the Gear S3’s release is imminent, the Gear S2 remains a beautiful piece of industrial design, and a smartwatch. Updates to the software have come steadily, patching the serious connectivity bugs we identified in our initial review and...

Gear S2 review: Samsung's best smartwatch is still a work in progress

Samsung's latest smartwatch packs a thoughtful, elegant interface made possible by a rotating bezel, with respectable battery life and a great screen rounding out the feature list. Alas, the sort of end-to-end control over hardware and software that...

Spinning bezel interface is brilliant ; Solid battery life ; Sleek, minimal looks ; Works with non-Samsung phones

Limited app selection ; S Voice is hit-or-miss ; Vibrations feel a little weak

The company's API for scoring toxicity in online discussions already behaves like a racist hand dryer.

Samsung Gear S2 review: A new spin on smartwatches

A great design and a clever rotating bezel make this one of the best-looking Android watches ever -- but it doesn't run Android Wear.

The Gear S2 has an eye-catching design, a clever rotating bezel that's actually useful, beautiful display, solid health tracking and slightly better battery life than other high-end smartwatches. Plus, it works with a variety of Android phones.

Fewer available apps or seamless connected services than Android Wear and Apple Watch; no speakerphone; S-Voice commands work, but not as well as they could; not compatible with iPhone.

Samsung's newest smartwatch reinvents itself with a whole new look and feel to create one of the best-designed wrist gadgets around -- but it still lacks the apps to set it above the competition.

Samsung's Gear S2 3G does not clear up if phones should be on your wrist

Yes, there are watches that are also phones. I lived with one for weeks.

The 3G version of the Gear S2 has all the features and design of Samsung's Wi-Fi-only S2 smartwatch, but adds a speakerphone and built-in GPS along with full standalone phone and data service.

It's more expensive, requires a connected data plan to pair with, and runs out of battery life quickly on cellular. It's bulkier, too. Also, the Gear S2 3G doesn't have that many great apps, and it doesn't yet work with iPhones.

Samsung's cellular-enabled smartwatch adds some interesting features to the Gear S2, but it's just not easy or useful enough to justify the extra expense.

Samsung Gear S2 3G (T-Mobile, Dark Grey)

Not all of them, though. The Samsung Gear S2 3G is a smartwatch that has its own cell service. It can work without any phone at all. I wore the Gear S2 3G for a few weeks. And, now I've taken it off. It's an amazing little demonstration that a watch...

Samsung Gear S2 review

So far, 2016 has been a quiet year for wearable tech. The best watches and fitness bands you can buy right now were, for the most part, released in 2015. You can count the number of new and notable wearable things that debuted in the first five months...

Samsung Gear S2 (dark gray)

Samsung's Gear S2 debuted last year at at the IFA show in late August. It's a safe bet that the Gear S3 unveiling could happen at the same show this year. In the meantime, earlier this year, Samsung introduced the Samsung Gear S2 3G -- a close copy of...

Attractive design ; Great display ; Great interface

Proprietary strap mounts (on standard model) ; Limited third-party apps ; Voice controls are slow and limited

Samsung Gear S2

The Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch has great software and a thoughtful design going for it, but a paltry app selection and finicky voice recognition hold it back.

Sleek design. Nice display. Useful rotating bezel. Intuitive user interface. Good battery life.

Weak app selection. Spotty voice recognition. Pricey.

Conclusions The Samsung Gear S2 should certainly sit alongside the Apple Watch and the Pebble family as one of the better smartwatch options on the market. It sports a sleek design, a user-friendly interface that blows the confusing Android Wear out of...

Samsung Gear S2 Review

When you can do so much with your smartphone, it's easy to assume that your smartwatch needs to be equally capable in order to make it worthwhile on your wrist. Problem is, all those talents can turn the wearable experience into a confusing morass of...

I’m quietly impressed by the Gear S2. Samsung has created something which actually feels like a watch on your wrist, not a clunky smartwatch, and its deep control over Tizen makes many of the regular interactions you have with it a pleasure. That often...
