Bowers & Wilkins Z2 (review): Nice AirPlay speaker fails to wow

This attractively design $400 wireless speaker sounds pretty good and has a built-in Lightning dock, but it doesn't quite stand out enough in a crowded market.

The ; is a compact AirPlay speaker with an integrated Lightning dock that's attractively designed, sounds good for its size, and is lightweight enough to easily move from room to room (though it does have to be powered by an AC adapter).

Expensive; could sound a little better for the price; no built-in rechargeable battery for mobile use.

The step-up Zeppelin Air ($599.99) simply updates the "old" Zeppelin Air speaker with a Lightning dock -- the speaker itself hasn't changed -- but the Zeppelin Z2 reviewed here, while a successor to the Zeppelin Mini , is an entirely new speaker.

Review: Bowers & Wilkins Z2

Bowers & Wilkins is back with the Z2, a $400 iPhone dock that also does AirPlay. It's a wonderful sounding speaker, but the AirPlay platform...

Sound is natural, bright and full. Gets satisfyingly loud. Looks gorgeous, with soft-touch material around the top and bottom and a sleek metal grill in front. Comes in black and white

There’s an old Italian proverb* that says, “Your cart is only as good as the donkey you’ve hitched it to.” And AirPlay is one flakey donkey. Charging dock on top only works with Apple handsets with Lightning ports — iPhone 5, iPod Touch and iPod Nano....

Bowers & Wilkins Z2

The elegantly designed, yet relatively affordable, Bowers & Wilkins Z2 speaker system raises the bar for audio quality, and offers wireless AirPlay connectivity along with a Lightning connector to dock your iPhone or iPod touch.

Sleek, unobtrusive design. Cleverly designed Lightning Connector dock. Warm, rich, transparent sound. Bass response has real weight. Crisp, clear wireless audio over AirPlay. Easy to set up using free app.

Awkward, egg-shaped remote. Chops off a couple of seconds of each track in wireless mode.

Performance and Conclusions Behind the metal grille is a pair of 3.5-inch full range drivers and a 20 watt-per-channel stereo amplifier. Bowers & Wilkins lists the system's frequency response as 50 to 20,000Hz +/- 3dB, with 6dB down points at 42Hz and...

B&W Z2 AirPlay Dock and Wireless Speaker Review

In a market flooded with iPod docks and Airplay speakers, the B&W Z2 seeks to stand thanks to it's small stature and good looks, but it's not without some caveats. Read on for our full review.

Great styling ; Small package ; Big sound ; IR remote and on-board controls

Compression and high volumes ; Limited bass output ; Lightning connector dock only works with newer iOS devices

Bowers & Wilkins Z2 iPod/iPhone Dock Preview

What you're getting with the B&W Z2 is a top of the line Apple dock and AirPlay streamer with the heritage of the legendary Bowers & Wilkins behind it. For many, $400 will be a small price to pay.

The Z2 wireless Airplay speaker from Bowers & Wilkins is a perfectly suitable option for those of us looking for a sightly, powerful, and compact speaker system

Preview: The B&W Zeppelin Air has a new baby brother.

However, if the cash means little to you and you’re after a classy smaller dock that produces good sound quality in a small package, the Bowers & Wilkins Z2 sounds like a winner. We’ll be back with the full verdict once we get one in to review.

Bowers and Wilkins Z2 review

B&W's small but powerful new iPhone 5 dock

Rich, full sound ; Apple Airplay ; Compact design

Quite pricey ; Metal grille might be off-putting for some ; No iPhone? No love

Even though this is more affordable than the Zeppelin, the Z2's still-hefty price tag will no doubt alienate many potential buyers looking for a more compact speaker. But if price isn't the issue, the Z2 is essentially the Zeppelin Mini but even better...
