Focal Chorus 705V review

In terms of show-room and living-room appeal, the Focals are up there with the best.

Interesting looks ; expressive, widescreen sound

Can occasionally sound over-cautious

A grown-up, well-realised listen from a grown-up, well-realised product. But a little more vim wouldn’t go amiss every now and then

Focal Chorus 705V

Focal is France's leading hi-fi speaker manufacturer, and if the name isn't immediately familiar, that's because its complete loudspeaker systems were called JMLab up until 2004.

Smooth and unruffled sound

Limited bass weight and dynamic tension

Treble/high frequencies are detailed, clear and without harshness or sibilance. Smooth mids. Rich upper bass (also a potential weakness). Enough bass reach for adequately imparting the musical message with most music

No deep bass (-6dB cutoff is about 60 Hz). Resonance can be a problem in lower mids/upper bass with a few recordings -- can be ameliorated with good placement. Soundstage not as wide as with some speakers, but still very good

The first impression out of box is too bright. Big dissapointment. Period. Although in showroom it sounded pretty good. Manual suggest to age good 100 hours. I did not play any special breakin CDs and just listen.After about 6 month later, I started...
