Philips 37PF5521D 37in LCD TV

Has Philips produced the LCD bargain of the year, or do you get what you pay for?

Philips 42PF5521D review

The loss of performance belies the price

Attractive price

Picture colour tones ; Black level response

Cheap by price and cheap by nature. There are far better TVs around

Philips 37PF5521D review

At this price, what are the compromises?

Good black levels ; Impressive colours

Motion blurring ; Scant features ; Poor audio

Philips has cut too many corners here in the name of supposed value for money

Philips 26PF5521D review

An attractively designed entry-level LCD

Picture-in-picture options ; Integral Freeview tuner

Black levels ; No analogue PC input ; Slightly feeble sound

Good for undemanding second TV use, but black level issues make it inadequate as a main TV

Philips 42PF5521D

And so to our plasma contender - a TV which, at just ?800, is comfortably the cheapest set in this group test. But, um, actually the price doesn't seem all that surprising when you see the 42PF5521D in action?

Very cheap, standard definition pictures OK

Average black levels, below par colours, dithering over skin tones

Philips 26PF5521D

Costing just ?700, the 26PF5521D is one of the lower-end models in Philips' currently vast LCD range. But that doesn't stop it from looking very tidy with its slender black screen frame and contrasting silver speakers.

Twin HDMIs, good price, bright colours

Fairly significant black level problems, average sonics
