Philips 50PF9731D 50" Plasma TV

Video experts have long warned couch potatoes that watching TV in complete darkness can cause eye strain and fatigue. But that doesn't mean you should watch CSI with the lights blazing—the only thing that'll do is wash out the picture and prevent you...

Test Bench: Philips Ambilight 42PF9731D 42-inch LCD HDTV

After calibration it was more accurate, at 114K average variation. In the default maximum contrast setting I measured a blinding 186 footlamberts peak brightness, but I later reduced it to around 45 for home theater viewing.

Philips Cineos 32PF9731D 32in LCD TV

If you can live without the Full HD panel, Philips' 32in Cineos is every bit as good as its 37in sibling.

With its lovely looks, awesome features list, reams of connection options, surprisingly affordable price and above all sensational pictures, this 32PF9731D is about as irresistible as mid-sized LCD TVs get.

Philips 37PF9731D review

Philips takes on the budget boys with a cheapie 50-inch TV

Fantastic HD performance ; Peerless picture quality

1:1 pixel mapping problems ; Pricey

It's laden with treasures most of the models of this size can only dream about. If money's an object, look away from the screen now

Philips 32PF9731D review

Breaking the traditional LCD mould

Excellent high-def and standard-def pictures

Quite expensive

While the £1,800 asking price might seem a little much, the picture quality justifies it

Philips 42PF9731D review

There's not much this TV won't do, but is it really full HD?

Peerless HD performance ; Excellent range of features

No 1080p support ; High price

The definition of TV opulence - unnecessarily expensive, but performance in a class of its own

Philips comes good with a pricey but class-leading HD set that's sure to win over geeks and technophobes alike

Nothing short of a sumptuous telly. If your budget will stretch, it will repay you handsomely
