Philips 55PUS8601

The 55PUS8601 is the the most "serious" TV I've seen from Philips in the UK for some time. As well as boasting a native 4K Ultra HD resolution, this £1,700 55-inch set features a startling "Razor Slim" design, a four-sided version of Philips' Ambilight...

Stunning design ; Excellent sound from the detachable speakers ; 4K images generally look pretty good

Black level performance isn't great ; Upscaled HD images look a bit processed ; Smart interface can be tedious

Philips 65PUS8601

Philips' new Ambilux technology might have hogged the IFA headlines, but the Dutch brand also had another innovative – and potentially affordable – TV series up its sleeve in the shape of the PUS8601s.

Philips 65PUS8601 review

Ambilight tech and detachable speakers make this Philips 4K TV something quite different...

Good detail and strong contrast ; Customisable sound ; HDR update to come

Lacks subtle colour and black detail ; Menus are difficult to use

As an overall package, the Philips 65PUS8601 offers something quite different; in terms of picture quality, it is only a few steps short of five stars

Philips PUS8601 4K TV with 4-sided Ambilight review: Colour us impressed

It can take quite a lot for a TV to stand-out from the crowd. Philips' approach? Plonk some LED lights around all four sides of its rear - aka Ambilight, used to real-time project coloured lighting in sync with the image on screen - and, no doubt,...

4-sided Ambilight is a real visual treat, slim design looks great, future-proofed for 4K content, Android OS a step-up for Philips, great sound thanks to speaker separates, affordable and competitive

Not class-leading picture quality, won't be Ultra HD Premium certified (if you want best of best you'll need to pay more and look elsewhere), feet are really wide-apart (select stand carefully!)

If you want a 4K TV to stand-out from the crowd then Amblight is one surefire way to do it, especially if you can wall-mount it. Plus the Philips PUS8601 does a grand job at looking elegant even when it's switched off, and it always sounds great too.

Philips 55PUS8601 review

Philips gets serious about TV again

Gorgeous-looking TV ; Excellent audio quality ; Sharp, colourful pictures ; Relatively robust Android implementation

Complicated to use ; Contrast isn't the best ; Android interface is unhelpful ; HDR still months away

The design of the 55PUS8601 is a delight, especially thanks to its four-sided version of Philips' Ambilight technology and ultra-slim detachable speakers. Picture performance is mostly very good, and excellent in the case of native 4K content. The...

Philips 55PUS8601 Ultra HD 4K LED TV Review

The Philips 55PUS8601 Ultra HD 4K LED TV has a razor slim design and detachable speakers but is it enough to give it an edge in a rapidly changing...

Natural and detailed images ; Good colour accuracy ; Attractive design ; Great build quality ; Excellent sound ; Decent input lag ; Plenty of features

Limited colour space ; No 3D support ; Inconsistent gamma ; Calibration controls ineffective ; Remote over-sensitive

In many respects the Philips 55PUS8601 is a great flat-screen Ultra HD LED LCD TV, with a lovely design, solid build quality and superior sound thanks to detachable speakers. There are plenty of connections and features, along with Hex Core processing...
