Samsung HL-S5679W

The first rear-projection television to replace the traditional lamp and color wheel with an array of LEDs.

Fast start-up. Has fewer of the common DLP-related rainbow image artifacts. Good video processor performance.

Not as bright as lamp-driven models. Poor default color accuracy. Excessive power consumption in standby mode.

Performance

Samsung HL-S5679W

LED light source last longer than bulbs and eliminates DLP's "rainbow effect"; excellent color accuracy; sharp, smooth picture with no visible screen grain; numerous picture controls with four memories per input; CableCard with TV Guide EPG;...

Expensive; color and brightness vary across screen; blacks not as deep as those of competing televisions; somewhat sluggish menu response.

Although the LED-powered Samsung HL-S5679W does a lot of things right, its picture quality isn't up to the standards set by its high price.

Samsung HL-S5687W 56” DLP RPTV

Samsung's latest line of 1080p RPTVs are getting a lot of online buzz these days. The HL-S models are being praised as worthy successors to the previous HL-R line, which was itself very well-regarded. The company sent us the HL-S5687W to use in our...

For the most part, the HL-S5687W is a worthy successor to the previous generations that were so highly regarded. Color, grayscale, detail, subjective black level, and shadow detail were all excellent. The primary drawbacks were the effective lack of a...

Samsung HL-S5688W 1080p DLP Rear Projection TV

Regardless of which screen size you pick, the Samsung 1080p HL-S series is a winner. I was also extremely impressed with the 71" version I've seen several times in the field. Not only is the HL-S technically competent and generally quite good as...

Samsung HL-S5688W 1080p DLP Rear Projection TV

Useful FeaturesI reviewed an HL-S5686W Samsung some time ago. That was a 720p set. The HL-S5688W reviewed here ($2,599) is a DLP set with similar features, plus 1080p resolution and the ability to accept a 1080p source.

Ultimate AV: Samsung HL-S5688W 1080p DLP Rear Projection TV

Samsung makes several HL-S 1080p models in various screen sizes, including 50", 56", 61", and 71". Apart from the model that uses an LED light source it's likely that they differ mainly in features, not performance. While comparing different models in...

Unusually accurate color (Movie mode only)

Dark scene contrast lags slightly behind the competition

Samsung HL-S5679W DLP HDTV

A little less than a year ago, a predecessor to this TV competed in one of our Face Offs with five other RPTVs. It didn't do well. Despite the fact that it posted some of the best measurements of the group (including the most accurate color points and...

Samsung's Slightly Improved DLP TV

The HLS-5679w is the company's early effort to master LED technology, but there are still some kinks to be worked out.

I'm not a fan of high-definition televisions made with Texas Instruments' DLP (digital light processing) rear-projection microdisplay technology. It's not because of the images they produce or their price, but mainly because cramped big-city living...

The HL-S5679W picks up the 3:2 sequence very quickly on all 480i sources, both synthetic (Silicon Optix's HQV Benchmark) and real (Gladiator). With a prerelease copy of the HD HQV Benchmark, and using the Toshiba HD-XA1, the HL-S5679W correctly...
