Sony Bravia KDL-40WE5 40in LCD TV

Green credentials abound in the Sony Bravia KDL-40WE5, but have these affected picture quality?

I have to admit that when I first heard about the WE5 range, I kind of wrote it off as a gimmick. Cue egg on face, for Sony has not only managed to retain its current high picture quality standards on the 40WE5 while delivering genuine running...

Sony KDL-40WE5 review

Sony's first dedicated Eco TV breaks the 100W barrier

Great pictures ; Very low power consumption ; Presence sensor

Limited viewing angle

Outstandingly eco-friendly credentials matched by one heck of a performance

Sony Bravia KDL40WE5

The Sony Bravia KDL40WE5 is an impressive first stab at creating a "green" LCD, and while picture quality is good you pay a premium for the proprietary backlight.

Impressive picture ; DLNA support ; Audio ; Solid attempt at creating a power-efficient TV

Price ; Some of the Eco features are a bit naff ; LED backlighting is more power efficient

The Sony Bravia KDL40WE5 is a good all-rounder. It offers a smattering of high-end features and performance that is acceptable for an LCD in this price range. Yet, despite Sony's efforts to create a newer, greener technology, we can't help thinking...

Sony Bravia KDL40WE5

I can see an anoying clouding effect in the upper right corner of LCD. I bought the TV two days ago... I love the image quality of the panel, but the clouding effect is realy worst. If I can't fix it, I will change this TV for a Samsung TV.

Contrast, Color, Sound, Design, XMB

Poor USB reading options, Corner clouding, Why not DLNA Wireless

The TV looks good, features an XMB for easier navigation and fits in with the room. Great picture and sound. PS3 games and BD Movies look stunning in HD. Swivel base is good for different angles.

No bad points.

Stylish and performs very well too!

Do not appear to adjust the timing for the movement sensor - it turns itself off if no movement detected Doesn't help that the manual supplied is for a totally different TV?

Sleek and slim-line. Eco friendly feature such as the off-button (!) very useful.

For an eco-tv it has a stupid feature in that the on-screen menu for TV programme listings only gets updated if we leave the TV on standby for 4hours or more. Otherwise you do not get the TV listings. That is not compatible with its eco-credentials.
