Performance

Sony KDS-RXBR2

Produces deep blacks with excellent shadow detail; resolves every line of 1080-resolution sources; incredible amounts of picture control; excellent connectivity with three 1080p-compatible HDMI inputs, dedicated PC input; includes spare lamp.

Expensive; inaccurate primary colors; disappointing VGA connection.

While the Sony KDS-R60XBR2 has a picture that's essentially identical to its less-expensive SXRD stablemate, the prodigious feature set on this 60-inch HDTV will attract buyers who must have it all.

Sony KDS-R70XBR2 70-inch SXRD HDTV

Introduction I have always thought of a "home theater" as stereotypically consisting of a front projector like Sony's Qualia 004 or even their new and affordable "pearl" projector and a large filmscreen. How else would you get an image big enough for a...

Sony KDS-R70XBR2 1920x1080 SXRD RPTV

That set wasn't aimed at conventional retail channels and wasn't on the market very long. Attempts to deliver a really big image in a one-piece TV continue to this day. But these products are expensive, cumbersome, and not right for everyone.

Sony KDS-R70XBR2 1920x1080 SXRD RPTV

The Sony KDS-R70XBR2 may not be perfect. I'd like to see more technically precise color, and its performance on 480i/p sources could also be improved. But in an overall balance of strengths I can't imagine that you can do much better at the current...

Ultimate AV: Sony KDS-R70XBR2 1920x1080 SXRD RPTV

Superb images from both HD and good quality SD program material, Great blacks and peak contrast, particularly in auto iris modes, Excellent feature set for dialing in the best picture

Pleasing but inaccurate color

Sony KDS-R60XBR2 60" SXRD RPTV

Now, here we are a model year later, and the XBR2 series is starting to hit the showrooms. One expected change was its ability not only to display 1080p, but also to accept 1080p from new Blu-ray Disc players. The styling didn't change (unless you opt...

Sony KDS-R60XBR2 60" SXRD RPTV

Sony's rear-projection 1080p SXRD sets really lit a fire under the HDTV market last year. Using Sony's dynamic iris system, these RPTVs produced deep blacks and stunning contrast like never before for a non-CRT "microdisplay". No other RPTV could match...

Sony KDS-R70XBR2 RPTV: Short Take

This set is part of Sony's second generation lineup of XBR-class SXRD displays. Although it's not cheap at $7800, this is a far cry from the $13K required to take home the original 70" SXRD RPTV, the Qualia 006. And this set has a newer, smaller SXRD...
