Review: Sony KDL-46HX850 LED Internet TV

For television buyers who prefer LCD over plasma, few manufacturers are doing as much to earn their dollars as Sony.

Sony KDL-HX850 review: Sony KDL-HX850

Sony KDL-HX850

The ; delivers excellent picture quality for an LCD, with deep blacks and plenty of detail in shadows. Blooming was minimal, and both uniformity and viewing angle were very good. The Gorilla Glass front adds both toughness and good looks.

The HX850 is expensive compared with like-performing plasmas, and color tended somewhat toward blue.

The Sony HX850 is a smart-looking Smart TV with sparkling picture quality, making it a front-runner for plasma-phobic videophiles.

Sony Bravia KDL-46HX850

Sony's Bravia HX850 series is a good-looking but pricey HDTV line offering LED backlighting, 3D support, Web features galore, and accurate out-of-the-box color—if only the contrast ratio were higher.

Attractively designed. Excellent image detail. Wide viewing angles. Accurate colors. Energy efficient.

Pricey, and 3D glasses not included. Low contrast ratio.

Conclusion At $2,600, Sony’s KDL-55HX850 is a bit pricey, especially when compared with our Editors’ Choice for Budget HDTVs, the $1,430 Vizio M3D550KD. Still, it is $900 less expensive than the same-size LG’s 55LM9600, and outperforms that set in...

Sony KDL-HX850 review

In 2011 we reviewed two excellent Sony TVs in the form of the HX929 -- the best-performing LCD TV of the year outside of the Sharp Elite -- and the NX720 , a more affordable yet still superb performer that earned our Editors' Choice Award . Our...

Sony HX850 BRAVIA Review (1080p 3D LED Internet TV)

There was a time when Sony's BRAVIA TVs led the industry, and were the automatic first-choice for home entertainment enthusiasts. Little stays still in consumer electronics, however, and now Sony finds itself fighting Korean upstarts for the King of...

Beautiful colors, superlative connectivity, and discretely handsome style. The Sony HX850 may not shout about its skills when you first look at it, but its LED display is among the best we’ve seen. Contrast levels and some hiccups in 3D performance...

Sony Bravia KDL-55HX850

The Sony Bravia KDL-55HX850 is Sony's flagship TV for 2012, throwing in all the bells and whistles Sony has to offer. What that amounts to, though, seems largely academic. Most of the features are either minor upgrades to online and streaming content...

Expect it to have excellent performance ; A dual-core processor built in

Terrible menu, for a second year in a row

The Sony Bravia KDL-55HX850, as the flagship TV for 2012, represents all the Sony has been developing in the last year. So It’s fascinating, therefore, to see how they want to launch their 2012 strategy here at CES, the industry’s annual call to arms....

Sony KDL-55HX850 LED/LCD HDTV

Sony definitely brought more performance to the KDL-55HX850 LED HDTV than to other televisions in the same line. However, the question remains about whether that performance is worth the bump in price.

The KDL-55HX850 should offer better black-level performance than we observed in the KDL-55HX750, thanks to its true local dimming ; The HX750 offered good light output, good detail, great color accuracy, and better-than-average screen uniformity; we...

As an LCD TV, the KDL-55HX850's viewing angle will not be as wide as that of a plasma TV ; Sony does not include any pairs of active 3D glasses in the package. The company's least expensive glasses (TDGBR250/B) are currently sold for about $50 apiece

The KDL-55HX850 incorporates many things we liked about the KDL-55HX750, and the addition of local dimming should improve upon the main thing we didn't: its black level. This TV also has a more stylish design and a slightly thinner form. Do these...

Sony KDL-55HX850 3D LCD HDTV

The most popular, current approach to designing an LCD HDTV with LED lighting is to position the LEDs around the periphery of the screen and rely on diffusors to spread the light out uniformly. Sometimes (but not always) the brightness of the LEDs is...

At an MSRP of $2,600—as I write this, it’s on sale for less on Sony’s own Website, although such offers are fluid—the KDL-55HX850 isn’t exactly a steal. But when you consider its superb black level, crisp color, and near-reference-quality 3D, you’d...
