A decent 4K smart TV from Toshiba, but the UK31's design is starting to look dated, and its performance suffers from weak contrast

Toshiba 50UK3163DB review: a cheap 4K TV that punches above its weight

The Toshiba 50UK3163DB is a budget TV that delivers impressive image quality and big features, including Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos

Good value ; Surprisingly punchy HDR ; Impressive 4K sharpness ; Easy to use ; Fast game mode response time

Very average black levels ; No Disney+ or Apple TV apps ; Slightly plasticky build quality ; Some motion handling issues ; Limited viewing angles

The Toshiba 50UK3163DB provides surprisingly powerful HDR highlights 4K detail for a TV of its price, and Dolby Vision helps to really make the most of what it can do. The audio is also a cut above the competition. Black levels aren't as hot, but...

The boldest 4K HDR picture we've seen from a sub-£500 TV

Exceptionally sharp 4K pictures ; Superbly punchy HDR ; Good smart features

Black levels aren’t the best ; Gaming features are limited ; No Disney+ or Apple TV apps

While the 50UK3163DB isn’t consistent enough to completely bowl us over, when it looks good, it looks very good indeed.

If you're looking for a cheap 4K HDR smart TV, especially at larger sizes, then the Toshiba UK31 is a good value option - if Disney+ isn't a must
