Toshiba Regza 40WL753

If you're a casual TV user after an affordable but decently featured 40in LCD TV, the 40WL753 is just about worth considering.

Toshiba 40WL753 review

Can Toshiba's networkable Freeview HD LED TV help it catch up with its flatscreen rivals?

Resolution+ standard-def upscaling ; Artefact-free SD and HD pictures ; Plenty of connections ; Easy-to-use remote and interface ; Motion processing is subtle yet effective

Mediocre contrast levels ; Audio lacks warmth ; Square-edged design ; YouTube function is frustrating to use ; Supplied manual is far too perfunctory

Toshiba has struggled somewhat since the demise of its HD DVD hi-def disc format. Late on the Blu-ray bandwagon and slow to announce a 3D set, the brand will be hoping its 2010 flatscreens help it reclaim some lost ground.

Toshiba 40WL753 review

At just under a grand, this 40 inch Toshiba has to tackle the big names head on – and this time they prove to be a bit too much to handle

Decent styling ; good contrast and detail levels ; impressive Freeview HD tuner

Can’t match the picture quality of the other premium sets ; undeniably patchy backlight causes problems

The competition at this price is just too tight for this average Toshiba
