Review: Sanyo Xacti VPC-SH1

The Sanyo VPC-SH1 is not a great camcorder, but its blend of respectable video and still image quality, compact size, functional features, and reasonable price make it a sensible purchase.

The VPC-SH1 uses a single 1/3.6-inch CMOS sensor to capture imagery that gets compressed to MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video and JPEG stills. Video resolutions and frame rates range from 1920-by-1080-pixel HD at 60 interlaced frames per second (fps) or 30...

Nice camera for the money

First off, I'd like to say this is my first HD camera. I've owned a Sony handycam and an ancient JVC that I bought ten years ago. So, HD video is kind of new to me. The movies I take with this camera are spectacular. I have set it to 720p@60FPS mode,...

Excellent video ; Very good pictures ; Good low light video ; Great zoom-23x ; Easy to use, yet still plenty of manual controls ; Cool extras ; Apple integration ; Perfect size for my hands ; Amazingly cheap

Skips a little on full HD mode @60 fields/sec. Not sure if this is the camera or my SDHC card (class 10). A Sandisk extreme card would probably fix it, but I won't shell out the cash for one

Great camcorder!

Feature-packed; very fast on/off. I bought this with 16 GB sd card and have plenty of space to record!!It is also not as small as had assumed having seen all the pictures online. It fits perfectly into a guy's hand and is actually a lot more durable...

Sanyo Xacti VPC-SH1 review

Fairly affordable and offering a decent balance of abilities, the Sanyo Xacti VPC-SH1 is a good camcorder that takes notable still photos. Superior video quality is available elsewhere, however, for around the same price.

Affordable ; Relatively impressive photo quality ; 23x optical zoom extends to 30x with no loss of quality ; Easy-to-use simple mode

Terrible image stabiliser ; Flimsy grip strap ; Framing photos is awkward on the 16:9 LCD screen

Reasonable performance on the video side, plus above-average photo quality and some useful options make the Xacti VPC-SH1 a viable option in the lower-to-mid range.
