Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play review: Bring your 'A' game

Side-slider with dedicated gaming controls, Quad-band GSM /GPRS/EDGE support, 3G with HSDPA and HSUPA, 4.0" 16M-color capacitive LED-backlit LCD touchscreen of FWVGA resolution (480 x 854 pixels), Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread, 1 GHz Scorpion CPU, Adreno...

CPU and GPU not the best there is, Display has relatively poor viewing angles, Phone is a bit big for one-handed use, Video recording maxes out at WVGA resolution, No FM radio, No smart dialing, No shutter key, No video-calling over 3G

Let’s get one thing straight here. The XPERIA Play is a gaming droid and you shouldn’t get hung up on the less than stellar video and single-core-only CPU. It wasn’t meant to be the flagship in the XPERIA lineup – it’s up to the Arc to shoulder the...

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G (AT&T) review: Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G (AT&T)

Editors' note: For this review, we focused on the performance differences between AT&T's phone and the Verizon model. For a full analysis of the Xperia Play's design and features, check out our review of Verizon's Xperia Play .

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G integrates phone and gaming features like no other handset before it. It offers all the essential smartphone features, and call quality is respectable.

Some of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G's gaming controls are unresponsive. It lacks an HDMI-out port, photo quality is poor, and data speeds are unimpressive.

AT&T's Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G is ideal for gamers, but we'd prefer to see more-accurate controls, a few more features, and a faster data network.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G (AT&T)

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play 4G is an excellent phone for gaming, and a solid phone in its own right; just make sure it has games you want to play.

Fantastic gamepad. Good ‘4G’ speeds. Comes with multimedia dock. Inexpensive.

Doesn't play PlayStation games. Big and bulky.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread without a complicated overlay. It has a slide-out game pad that makes gameplay more immersive, and it comes preloaded with popular game titles like Crash Bandicoot and Asphalt 6. Features...

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play's touch-screen gaming controls are not as responsive and precise as we would like, photo quality is average at best, and it lacks an HDMI port and 4G LTE.
