Olympus PEN E-PL7 (Body Only, Black)

 

Enhancements include an updated autofocus system and imaging engine, a better LCD that flips down, broader remote control options, two new art filter effects and a tweaked design.

With its flexible display, great set of controls and generally streamlined design, the Olympus PEN E-PL7 hits quite a few high notes.

It might be a little too complicated for newbies, and the grip could be bigger.

A likeable interchangeable-lens model, the Olympus PEN E-PL7's overall package makes an attractive alternative to an advanced compact and has quite a bit to offer as a first ILC.

Olympus' replacement for the 2-year-old PEN E-PL5 may look similar to its predecessor, but Olympus made a lot of significant changes for the E-PL7, mostly to incorporate newer technology that's since debuted in its OM-D line of interchangeable-lens...

The Olympus PEN E-PL7 is a compact Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera that hits a lot of the right notes, but it isn't quite an Editors' Choice.

Compact. Quick focus. 8.4fps burst rate. Micro Four Thirds lens system. In-body image stabilization. Tilting touch-screen display. Accessory port for optional EVF. Wi-Fi.

Sometimes slow to start and shoot. No support for 60fps video. Lacks standard mic input. Lacks built-in flash. Single control dial.

The OI Share app also supports remote control. A Live View feed streams to your phone, and you have the ability to tap an area of the frame to set the focus point. Full manual control is available, and you can change modes or activate in-camera Art...

The E-PL7 is the sixth camera in Olympus's midrange PEN Lite lineup. The PEN series has been somewhat overshadowed by the excellent OM-D cameras, whose DSLR-like styling has been better received than the rangefinder-esque PENs, but the PL7 makes a bid...

This little camera is a genuine jewel. I can carry it all day without noticing, which was my goal. The only real bother is the clip-on flash. I intend to buy a VF4, so having the hot shoe free for that means I'll be switching back and forth a bit ......

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f2.8 PRO lens lives up to its moniker, delivering professional results when paired with a Micro Four Thirds camera.

Maximum f/2.8 aperture throughout zoom range. Very sharp from edge to edge. Focus clutch system. Protected from dust, splashes, and cold temperatures. Minimal distortion.

Expensive. Lacks optical image stabilization.

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8 is a fast wide-angle lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. It's extremely sharp, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Very sharp. Fast aperture. Compact. Manual focus clutch system. Virtually no barrel distortion.

Hood not included. Not weather sealed.

The Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f2.8 Macro is a compact lens that allows you to bring tiny objects into sharp focus.

1:1 magnification. Minimal distortion. Tack-sharp at f/4. Focus limiter switch. Weather-resistant design.

Expensive. Soft edges at f/2.8.
