Second Exerex laptop

Added 1GB A-DATA memory module, I made sure it was the same manufacture. Win XP 32bit likes more than 1GB of memory. Total in the laptop was 1.5GB with 64MB shared video memory. I didn't have any preformance issues.

Linix was nice but different, I bought another HD and loaded Win XP Pro 32bit. Win XP went in just great, no install problems. VIA website had the drivers I needed, chipset, video and audio. Artheros AR5005G had the wireless driver, no problems....

Not for Newbies

I wished I'd waited one more week to order the price dropped 50 dollars. As hard as I have been on this laptop I'm still hopeful it will work out ok.

Nice screen, hardware seems to run well, good price. Comes with ever thing you need to get start for productive computing

Support is the lowest I've ever seen in a computer product,EVER!!!!! gOS has little to no support, Driver Support doesn't exist. Getting hardware information is next to impossible. So even if you want to install another operating system, be prepared...

EVEREX VA1500V NoteBook VIA C7-M 1.50GHz 15.4" Wide XGA+ 512MB Memory DDR2 667 60GB HDD 5400rpm DVD/CD-RW Combo VIA Chrome 9 HC IGP

I hope that Everex will soon provide BIOS and driver updates for this laptop; has potential but needs a little polish.

Price can't be beat, for a 15.4" laptop! gOS is a fine Ubuntu spin-off; I just didn't care for it so I installed XP, partitioned a storage partition and installed Ubuntu 8.04 beta in dual boot with XP

I expected to receive a software disc, as shown in the picture gallery, for this laptop...didn't come with it

NewEgg has the memory spec incorrectly listed at DDR2 667. Please note that it is actually 553. I bought the wrong memory based on these specs. Shame on NewEgg - they want a restocking fee for recommending the wrong item. The gOS is OK. I personally...

For those that complain about this being a generic CPU, you should be thankful, not complaining. VIA makes excellent, low power consumption CPUs. I wouldnt ever buy a lappy like this that didnt have a VIA. Actually I have wanted one for years as these...

FreeBSD (with X), and PC-BSD dont work with it ; I bought this laptop with the intent of putting PC-BSD on it. PC-BSD crashed in the install 14 times in a row. Gave up and tried FreeBSD 7.0. It installed just fine, but X gave me fits ; I installed the...

Not well supported by Everex

You get what you pay for. If your time is worth anything to you, get something else. Also, my laptop says model no VA250E on the bottom, but VA1500V on the box. Not sure what's up with that. Neither model can be found anywhere on the Everex support site.

Cheap, big screen

Go to everex.com support and try to find this system anywhere. It's not supported online with drivers, manuals, anything. It doesn't come with a system restore CD, so if you reformat to install Windows, there's no way to get it back to factory setup....

an excellent buy

I wrote this review so people would not get the wrong impression of Linux based operating systems. The gOS distribution that comes with this notebook is adequate, but the Ubuntu os it is based on is in fact even better. Once I removed the simplistic...

Very affordable ; very functional ; Ubuntu based distribution can easily be restored back to base Ubuntu (I kept the custom gOS theme, since it is quite attractive)

requires a little bit of setup still

Not bad

This notebook is great if you need something to do everyday computing. The price is great for a system with these specifications. Frankly I don't see the logic in buying a notebook with a faster processor then the one on this computer, unless of course...

Has a pretty big display for the price. Via C7-M processor out performs my Gateway notebook with a 2.4 GHz P4. Once this computer is running Windows XP its extremely reliable

Low battery life (approximately 90 minutes). Included GOS operating system is complete garbage. Mono sound

nice laptop aftermodification

THis computer is night and day linux and xp, recpectivly. Ran all my movies great under windows. If you want a no frills laptop, go no further. And the cpu fan spins like crazy all the time with linux distro, and rarely with xp.

Ligth, cheap, nice hardware, big screen. works great once you install xp. reason for 4 eggs is that this computer came with linux and it sucks with pre install. if it came with xp i would give it 5 eggs

the linux distro sucks, makes the computer slow and unbarable. The reason for this is that i tried watching some movies, they all skipped. When you first boot the screen flickers like crazy. but reboot fixes that

Nice Budget PC

As far as the many claims I've read from people having difficulty finding memory upgrades that work - what the heck upgrades are you trying to use? I've been working on 3 of these - upgraded them all using Kingston DDR2 667 ram without any problems. I...

Decent weight - not too heavy that you mind porting it around. I'm an open source advocate so I love that it comes bundled with Linux and OSS software. Battery life is decent but not spectacular. The screen size and picture quality though are really...

This is more of a personal preference but ... I don't particulary like the gOS version of Linux that comes pre-installed. I don't like having a MacOS-like "dock" on the screen. Also, if you restart xorg for some reason the display refresh goes funny...
