Canon EF 800mm f/5.6 L IS USM Lens

There is nothing like the arrival of a new Canon Super Telephoto Lens to bring the excitement of Christmas to any time of the year. And the hit on the credit card from this lens is considerably larger than the hit from most households' Christmas...

A serious piece of glass for serious long lens lovers.

Excellent but very expensive

Sadly I had to return this lens because it had some paint chips but I tried it briefly. I achieved some outstanding images and 800mm is very useful for wild birds. Focusing and sharpness is great except with extenders. The 2x mkii extender gave poor...

Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM review by genotypewriter

It's an excellent lens in every regard. Compared to the 200 f2L IS (which I have) it falls a bit short in the CA performance. But if you've used the 200L IS this is something you'll fuss about with every lens you use and unfortunately the 800L IS isn't...

Everything

Nitpicking a bit but CA

Took The Plunge

Had the Canon 500mm f 4.0 super telephoto and was very satisfied with the superb quality but found I needed more reach without using the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. Having to change converters in the field, with weather and huimidity being what it is...

Good lens....... BUT

"This is a GREAT lens, even at 11 pounds provided you have a tripod or if you get the lens with built in image stabilization. Wonderful for sporting events and wildlife photography, and provides good crisp pictures. I prefer to use a vertical polarized...

Excellent depth and field of view.

Horrible shakes without a tripod or image stabilization.

Product Specifications

Large-aperture telephoto L lens with a camera shake correction function is best suited to nature and sports photography. Developed as a successor to the EF600mm f/4L USM. A fluorite lens and two UD lenses are used in the optical system to assure very high picture quality. This lens has also a protection glass and a rear filter as standard, which are included in the number of lenses. The camera shake correction has an effect of approx. two stops in terms of shutter speed. This lens has also "camera shake correction mode 2" which corrects shaking of the viewfinder image when, for example, shooting a moving object, and a tripod can be used with the camera shake correction function ON. High-speed autofocusing is achieved by the weight reduction of the group of focusing lenses and improvement of the autofocusing drive algorithm. A new AF stop function, which stops autofocusing temporarily, is adopted. Manual focusing is performed mechanically to save power. Main components are made of a magnesium alloy to reduce the weight of the lens, including the optical system, making it much lighter than conventional lenses. Rubber parts are used as mount and switch components to achieve excellent dust- and drip-proofness. The tripod mount can be removed, and the drop-in filter 52 (standard), carbon fiber hood, and suitcase-type lens case are designed to be easy to use.
