Toshiba TDP-ET20U Multimedia DVD Projector

When Toshiba announced the TDP-ET20U Multimedia DVD Projector ($1,399 direct), it said the unit was aimed at both business and home-theater use. But my impression from looking at its features was that the emphasis was much more on home theater. That...

Native widescreen format with 480p resolution. Includes DVD player and audio system. Short throw

DLP rainbow effect. Does relatively better with standard video than with DVDs. Mediocre audio quality

Despite a built-in DVD player, the Toshiba TDP-ET20U is optimized for standard video—and does a relatively better job with it than with DVDs.

Very cool

Bright - lots of lumens for use in family rooms, etc., without having to fully darken the room ; Very good warranty ; Cool looking unit ; Sits very close to the screen ; Feels like excellent build quality ; Excellent selection of inputs ; Internal DVD...

Lack of color temperature controls, and the projector's preset modes are all too "cool" for ideal movie watching ; Remote control has button crowding, especially the DVD transport controls

Fun product. The kids will love it. This is a bonus room hit, just picture your kids - or you, spending even more time - watching TV, playing video games, watching movies, on a screen or wall that dwarfs the largest plasma displays or big screen TVs

The most stylish projector here, Toshiba's TDP-ET20 is smooth, egg shaped and finished in metallic black.

Toshiba TDP-ET20 review

Toshiba's ET20 is a one-stop solution for watching big screen films in a small space. You need less than a metre to plug-and-play with integrated DVD player and speakers, but images are average and the sound is almost irrelevant

Convenience ; Close projection ; Futuristic design ; Ease of use ; Acceptable image quality

Downscaled images ; Noisy fan ; Insubstantial sound

Leaving sound to one side, the unit's image quality is reasonably impressive, although you can get better performance for your money if you buy a dedicated projector. Pictures from the on-board DVD player are detailed and evenly balanced with sumptuous...

Optoma did this before, but the Toshiba is a better performer – it's a clever idea, and well-executed

Toshiba TDP-ET20

Most projectors need to be a long way from the screen to deliver massive pictures, but not this DLP model from Toshiba. It uses an ultra short-focus lens to generate a 2.5m (100in) image when placed just 1.3m from the screen

Good short throw performance, Impressive speaker output

Flakey surround sound performance, Disappointing resolution

Has some distinct positives but poor resolution and a variety of sound niggles let it down
