Konica Minolta Elite 5400 II -- Outside the Box

Just as we were wrapping up our review of the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 what does Konica Minolta do? It releases the $599 DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 II. It was back to the drawing board for us.

It's hard to beat a box that can quickly (25 seconds) scan 16-bit channels with a dynamic range of 4.8 (implying a higher Dmax, the maximum density it can record) at 5400-dpi resolution (a 42.2-Mp file) with multi-sampling to reduce random noise. We...

Charles Moore Reviews The DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 Film Scanner

Looks, feels, and works like a fine piece of high-end digital photographic equipment

Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 II Film Scanner

Leave your lab coat behind…

As film scanners go, the DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 II is a full-featured device that delivers very good results for (relative to other scanners of this type that are far more costly) a good price. While spending around $600 may seem like a large...

Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400

Used it infrequently over a few years, scanned a few hundred negs/ slides. Nice results enlargable to 16x 20. Loader mechanism stopped working. Similar to others reporting. The extended warranty company gave me a couple of hundred $, pro-rated. Nice...

Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400

Bought this scanner half a year after it hit the market. At the time it was at the head of the pack with respect to specs. It produced 200 scans the first 3 months I used it, and I really liked the options that where built into the software to control...

Good quality images, easy to use software

CRAP build! This turned out to be a very expensive investment at 286 scans durings its lifetime it works out at just over 2USD per scan ; Better off using a scanning service, save time and money ; -)

Still Exceeds Expectations, Update

Image processing, intuitive software, image quality

Batch mode is of little use (see text). Clumsy carrier loading.

Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400

I have used the 5400 for more than two years. It is capable of producing exceptionally detailed scans with very high dynamic range and excellent color rendition. I have tried Vuescan, but found it more cumbersome than the Minolta software. I believe...

Amazing scan quality once you master the technique ; No mechanical problems after more than a thousand scans

Flimsy film holders ; Slow scanning speed, especially with color negative film. Transparencies, even at 5400ppi, are acceptably fast. I rarely use multi-scanning, because I have found little benefit. Using Digital ICE or Grain Dissolver really prolongs...

Konica Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400

I bought this a few years ago because I wanted to scan hundreds of negatives. After some initial problems with the feeder, the repaired unit has worked consistently. I used the Minolta software (mostly) and Silverfast, but I preferred the Minolta...

Auto focus and multipass scanning ; Resolution ; Digital ICE

B&W scanning -- too much CCD/grain ; Feeder is finicky

Consumer review by:

Not recommend, Unreliable operation.

Great scans, software easy to use, my 70 year old mother can figure it out.

Product Specifications

The DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 is the first consumer film scanner to offer such a high level of optical resolution, enough to capture virtually all the details of a 35mm film frame. The amount of data you can obtain is astounding. An image scanned at maximum resolution can be enlarged to the equivalent of an A1-size printout at a high-quality inkjet setting (200dpi). And for A4-size output, print quality exceeds 600dpi. To maximize the performance of its 3-line CCD sensor, the DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 features sophisticated new optics from Minolta. The lens incorporated in the scanner has 8 elements in 4 groups. Higher resolution means greater detail - and sometimes, even details you don't want to see. To suppress the visibility of film grain, the DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 is equipped with Minolta's Grain Dissolver technology, a hardware-based solution that is conveniently fast. Grain Dissolver can be turned on or off as you please. It is automatically activated when you use Digital ICE, and helps improve results with scratch and dust removal. Random noise may appear in a digital image if the film original has significant dark areas. But because the DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 is able to sample your film 2, 4, 8 or 16 times, it can gather the data it needs to produce the clearest scan possible. And this data is considerable. 16-bit A/D conversion enables the scanner to distinguish over 65, 000 hues in each of its three color channels. This feature, together with an extensive 4.8 (computed) dynamic range, ensures that the DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 captures an unmatched degree of shadow area detail. Rely on either IEEE1394 (FireWire) or USB 2.0 Hi-Speed to get fast overall scan times. USB 2.0 lets you connect or disconnect the scanner whenever you want, and has the added benefit of compatibility with older USB (USB 1.1) interfaces.
