Sweet sound ; capable electronics ; stylish looks and durable build ; good spec ; value

Bloated, ponderous bass ; balance (with supplied speakers) is too polite

The Yamaha MCR-550 has now been replaced by the Yamaha MCR-555. As a system, it doesn’t add up – but the CD/receiver is both great value and talented

Great sound for the price. Easy to use and has all the features I need all in a sleek fairly compact unit with a pleasing minimalist design and proper remote control. Feels solid and looks to be well made.

Speaker covers look a bit tacky - but maybe I just have more traditional tastes!
