Sony BDP-S780 Review: Blu-ray Player Has a Slew of Internet Services, Plus a Web Browser

On paper, the Sony BDP-S780 looks like a great Blu-ray player. It comes with a large and well-chosen selection of Internet apps, including a Web browser. You can convert 2D to 3D and adjust the 3D settings. It's the fastest Blu-ray player I've tested...

Extra 3D settings improve quality ; Great Internet app selection includes Web browser ; Useful smartphone remote-control app

Expensive ; Hulu Plus and Netflix require Sony membership ; Considerable usability problems ; Browser lacks Flash

The Sony BDP-S780 offers a wide selection of Internet-streamed entertainment, but makes some curious compromises. Its 3D settings can improve stereoscopic viewing. But the $230 price may be a painful trade-off for this model's capabilities.

Sony BDP-S780

The Sony BDP-S780 is a blazing-fast, full-featured Blu-ray player, but its video issues keep it back from being truly excellent.

Fast loading times. Built-in Wi-Fi. 3D Support. Plenty of streaming media services.

Video processing issues cause tearing in fast motion footage.

SONY BDP-S780 3D Network Blu-ray Player Review

The Sony BDP-S780 is one of the best values in 3D networking Blu-ray players today. It loads movies quickly and offers a host of networking options with a great HD picture quality.

Easy Setup ; Built In Wi-Fi connectivity ; Lots of Network Apps, Including SKYPE ; 3D Upconversion ; Fast Operation

No Dual Output for HDMI ; Relatively standard build Quality ; No Backlit Remote

Sony BDP-S780

The Sony BDP-S780 is Sony's 2011 flagship blu-ray player. It replaced the excellent BDP-S770. However some features were removed, and Sony dropped the list price by $50 but added Skype and Super Bit Mapping. Key features like 3D playback, Wi-fi...

Although there are some reservations about the new design and patchy Wi-fi, on the whole the Sony BDP-S780 excels where it matters. With outstanding video enhancing features designed to optimize every pixel on your display, the end result is amazing....

The Sony BDP-S780 Blu-ray player takes its 3D imaging and Internet access seriously. But its shortcomings make it seem overpriced.
