A handful of updates make Creative's fresh 720p shooter a better value, but image quality still largely lags behind leaders like Kodak and Flip.

Excellent low-light performance ; Earbuds can function as external mic ; Exposure controls ; Wide-angle lens
No removable storage
The third-generation Vado HD has the widest-angle lens of any HD pocket camcorder, as well as exposure controls, great low-light video quality, and a sub-$200 price.

Creative's latest Vado HD makes some improvements over its predecessor, but not enough to make it stand out in the increasingly crowded pocket camcorder pack.
Compact body. Good low light performance. Headphone output/mic input jack. HDMI cable included.
Limited 4GB memory and no SD slot for expansion. 2x digital zoom. No 1080p support. Poor-quality still image capture.

Creative Labs Vado HD 3rd Gen
Compact stylish design; 2-inch LCD; responsive buttons; easy to use; charges through USB port; HDMI output; compatible with both OS X and Windows; supports optional external mic.
Software will only run if the device is attached; no SD card slot; no bundled carrying case.
Though the Creative Vado HD 3rd Gen doesn't do quite enough to distinguish itself from the competition, it does offer some nice improvements over earlier Vado HD models that keep it relevant in the pocket camcorder space.

Pure Digital may have pioneered the YouTube camcorder space with the launch of the original Flip, but that device was trumped in a number of ways when Creative first released the Vado. Creative's videocam had a sleeker body, a larger screen, and a...
Records high-quality HD video. Big, bright screen. Removable, rechargeable battery. 8GB of memory. HDMI-out. HDMI cable bundled
Only 2X digital zoom. Memory isn't expandable
Creative follows in Kodak's and Pure Digital's footsteps with its own HD pocket camcorder. The camera has all the charm of the original Vado and enough new features to make it best in show.

The newest addition to the ever-expanding mini-camcorder market is the Creative Labs Vado HD, a $230 pocket camcorder that can record 720p high-definition video. While it isn't quite as compact as Pure Digital's Flip Mino HD and won't win any awards...
Wide-angle lens ; Top-notch video for a pocket camcorder
Microphone a bit weak ; Struggles in low light
Creative's high-definition pocket camcorder impresses with its features and performance.

Editor's note: Because of changes in the competitive landscape since the Creative Vado was reviewed, we revised the design rating down from a 9 to a 7 and the features rating from an 8 to a 7, resulting in a drop in the overall rating from 8.0 to 7.0.
Solid 720p video; ultraslim design; removable, rechargeable battery; easy to use; one-touch video uploading to YouTube and Photobucket; includes mini HDMI connector and bundled cable for outputting 1080i video to an HDTV.
No flash-memory slot; Mac users have to manually copy video files to their computers; white balance is slightly off and colors are a bit amped.
The Creative Vado HD may fall slightly short of the Flip Video Mino HD in terms of video quality, but it's stronger feature set may tempt you.

In name recognition and sales, Pure Digital's Flip Video devices are as dominant in the YouTube-friendly pocket-camcorder world as the iPod is among audio players. But on paper, Creative's Vado Pocket Video Cam trumps the Flip models on several counts:...
Quick and easy uploads to YouTube ; Tiny, easy to use, and fairly feature-packed
Plastic build doesn't feel very durable ; Mediocre video quality
Video quality is disappointing, but this pocket camcorder is cheaper than any Flip.

Sleek and slim design. Low price. Large screen. Rechargeable battery. Easy-to-use software.
Poor uploaded video quality. Subpar mic.
Creative's Vado improves on its prototype, the Flip Ultra mini camcorder, in a number of ways, including design and price, but its choppy video quality may be too much to overlook.

Creative Vado
Ultraslim design; removable, rechargeable battery; easy to use; relatively inexpensive; one-touch video uploading to YouTube and Photobucket.
Included desktop software is almost featureless; no SD/MMC expansion slot; Mac users have to manually copy video files to their computers.
While its video quality doesn't quite measure up to some of its competitors, there are enough pluses to make the Creative Vado Pocket Cam a worthy contender in the mini camcorder market.
