JVC Everio GZ-MC500

Decent blend of video and still capabilities; generally sensible controls; easy searching and downloading; tiny size.

Mediocre battery life, viewfinder, and low-light performance; automatic features a bit sluggish; limited manual controls; no microphone jack.

This extremely compact, nicely designed camera should please technophiles who want both photo and video capabilities and can afford to splurge.

The JVC GZ-MC500 stands at the forefront of a new generation of camcorders. Say good-bye to tapes – the flash memory camcorders have arrived in force. Well, almost. The new Everio digital media series from JVC offers a number of benefits over MiniDV,...

JVC GZ-MC500 First Impressions Camcorder Review - HDD

The new GZ-MC500 was just released by JVC and breaks some new ground being the smallest three CCD camcorder pretty much ever, and being the first, and only, three CCD camcorder to record to tapeless media, namely, a 4GB Microdrive. On top of this, the...

Despite the 3CCD image sensor and 5 megapixel still images, the GZ-MC500 is more suited to the casual moviemaker than the serious video enthusiast.

Styling, quality 3CCD imaging sensor

Handling, 4GB hard drive on the small side, no AVI video format option

JVC Everio GZ-MC500

An extremely compact, nicely designed three-chip camera that records decent MPEG-2 video and stills.

Decent blend of video and still capabilities ; Generally sensible controls ; Easy searching and downloading ; Tiny size

Mediocre battery life, viewfinder, and low-light performance ; Automatic features a bit sluggish ; Limited manual controls ; No microphone jack

Due to its high pixel count, the GZ-MC500 produces wide-screen video that is every bit as sharp as its 4:3 video. Unfortunately, this high pixel count also results in inferior low-light performance. To get a reasonably bright image under less than...

JVC Everio GZ-MC500EK

Not only is this the smallest three-CCD camcorder we've ever seen, it's also a JVC Everio, so it doesn't record to DV tape. Like its MC200 predecessor (see April 05 issue), the GZ-MC500EK stores its video in Mpeg2 format on a Hitachi Microdrive...

The MC200 was a step in the right direction, but the JVC GZ-MC500EK really nails digital imaging convergence. A great camcorder and a good digicam, if hardly cheap, the MC500 sets the standard for pocket-friendly camcorders.

SimplyDV Review: JVC GZ-MC500 Digital Media Camera

Good images (video and stills) from 3CCDs, manual controls, good handling

LCD visibility difficult in bright sun, need o use bundled software for download to computer, expensive MicroDrive media

Surprising quality from 3CCDs, given HD media recording.

Miraculous Model

The MC500 uses three entirely separate sensors that respond independently to red, green and blue light. Because of this colour separation, the picture recorded to the MC500's internal microdrive is better than anything a single-CCD system is capable...

Gorgeous styling, professional-grade picture, easy operation

No remote, no FireWire
