JVC Everio GZ-HD6 Camcorder Review

The JVC Everio GZ-HD6 ($1,399 MSRP) is the company's third high definition Everio, the series of camcorders that record to internal hard disk drives (HDD). The inaugural model, the GZ-HD7, was a mammoth that offered a pro feel but couldn't match it...

The JVC Everio GZ-HD6, with a 120GB HDD, has capacity on its side. For that matter, so does the Sony HDR-SR12, which has the same amount of storage. Beyond that, JVC has a hard road to hoe convincing consumers to choose its camcorder over the...

JVC Everio GZ-HD620

A midrange model, with a big hard drive, high quality video, few frills, and a reasonable price.

Review: JVC Everio GZ-HD620 camcorder

Note: This article was updated to clarify some details. Just to be clear the HD620 does not record at 1080p. It is a 1080i camcorder that upconverts its output to 1080/60p. The company's literature is confusing and it often throws...

JVC GZ-HD6

In bright light environments, the GZ-HD6 produces a vibrant image that might be deemed too saturated for refined shooters. The GZ-HD6's three 1/5-inch CCDs contribute to the luminous color palette, but the sharpness leaves a lot to be desired. There is...

As a performer in Auto mode, the JVC GZ-HD6 is stronger in some areas, and weaker in others. We saw stronger showings from the Sony HDR-SR12 and Canon HF10. The Auto Exposure is lightning quick, while the Auto White Balance seems to take an eternity to...

Everio GZ-HD6

The GZ-HD6 replaces the HD3 as JVC's flagship high-definition camcorder. When we reviewed the HD3 back in 2007, we lamented the loss of many valuable ...

Solid video performance in optimum lighting, records in 'full' 1080p HD, 120GB hard drive, large range of manual controls, excellent optical image stabiliser

Results were below average in dim lighting, lacks many of the features found on its chief rival

The Everio GZ-HD6 is a solid HDD camcorder that can match most high-def cameras when it comes to picture quality. Unfortunately, it lacks many of the features found on Sony's 120GB offering, which happens to retail for exactly the same price.

Does a 120GB hard drive give JVC's GZ-HD6 camcorder a foothold in a growing flash memory market? James finds out.

JVC Everio GZ-HD6EK review

The advantage is that the JVC Everio GZ-HD6EK is capable of recording 1,920x1,080 video, with the option to output it progressively, provided you hook it up to a compatible flat-panel TV or projector using HDMI. Another feature of note for Mac users in...

This is a good choice of camera if huge storage capacity is a big factor. The JVC Everio GZ-HD6EK produces good pictures and sound and has a comprehensive set of connection options including FireWire. However, we found it rather bulky and the use of...

JVC Everio GZ-HD6

In isolation the HD6 is a good camera, however, on almost every turn it is outpointed by its Sony counterpart, the HDR-SR12.

Decent quality HD video ; Pleasant, if blocky, aesthetics ; Full-size HDMI port

No electronic viewfinder ; MPEG2 TS file format not widely supported ; Poor quality stills ; Slow menu system

Conclusion In isolation the HD6, as well as its cheaper sibling, the HD5, are good cameras. However, on almost every turn they are outpointed by its Sony counterparts, the SR12 and SR11, respectively.
