iPhone 3G review: Twice the hype, half the novelty

It's finally here - the iPhone 3G. No, we mean that literally. It's finally at our office and boy, are we excited! GPS, HSDPA purring under the new iPhone hood with a hefty number of software enhancements. But all them software goodies...

3.5" 16M-color TFT display with a resolution of 480 x 320 pixels ; Quad-band GSM support ; Tri-band UMTS support with HSDPA ; Built-in GPS receiver ; Wi-Fi ; 8 to 16GB of onboard storage ; Accelerometer, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor ; 2...

No video calls over the 3G network ; The handset wobbles on hard even surfaces ; There are a number of messaging downers ; Camera has no auto focus, nor video recording… nor any settings at all ; Safari browser doesn't support Flash and Java, doesn't...

So, back to the drill - the 3G-enabled iPhone was rumored ever since the iPhone 1G surfaced last year. Now that we have the real thing in our hands, it doesn't seem that groundbreaking anymore. Nevertheless, there are quite a few things to cover so we...

iPhone 3G review

It's hard to think of any other device that's enjoyed the level of exposure and hype that Apple found in the launch of the first iPhone. Who could forget it? Everyone got to be a gadget nerd for a day; even those completely disinterested in ...

Review: Apple iPhone 3G

[Editor's note: We've spent an entire week testing every single nuance of the iPhone 3G and what follows is Wired‘s official, pull-no-punches, boiled-down, just-the-facts review....

Without exception, the best user interface of any phone. WiFi and zippy 3G network fetch websites faster than a Labrador on a sirloin. GPS with Google Maps integration beats many handheld navigators. Bright, beautiful, highly responsive touchscreen...

Battery drains juice faster than a toddler in the desert. AT&T’s 3G network riddled with more holes than Krispy Kreme. Want to cut and paste? Bust out the scissors and glue. Plastic back highly susceptible to nicks and scratches. Still no MMS. Did we...

Apple iPhone 3G Smart Phone

The latest iPhone's 3G wireless radio accelerates data surfing, but the new model offers little else to justify upgrading from the previous iPhone.

Has a 3G radio for faster wireless data ; Integrates assisted GPS

Service plan is more expensive

If you already own a first-generation iPhone, though, you should be wary of upgrading. You'll pay more for service, and if you don't live in a 3G-friendly area, or can manage well enough using a Wi-Fi network for Web browsing instead of a cellular...

Apple 16GB iPhone 3G

Innovative design and seamless integration between software and hardware propelled the first-generation iPhone to instant stardom. Its successor, the iPhone 3G, at once expands upon that innovation--and delivers it at half the entry price of its...

Has a 3G radio for faster wireless data ; Integrates assisted GPS

Service plan is more expensive ; Mediocre battery life

With a lower price, 3G radio, and GPS, this smart phone is in a class by itself.

Apple iPhone 3G review: Apple iPhone 3G

Apple iPhone 3G

The Apple iPhone 3G offers critical new features including support for high-speed 3G networks, third-party applications, and expanded e-mail. Its call quality is improved and it continues to deliver an excellent music and video experience.

The iPhone 3G continues to lack some basic features that are available on even the simplest cell phone. Battery life was uneven, and the 3G connection tended to be shaky. Also, the e-mail syncing is not without its faults.

The iPhone 3G delivers on its promises by adding critical features and sharper call quality. The iTunes App Store is pretty amazing, and the 3G support is more than welcome. Critical features still are missing, and the battery depletes quickly under...

Apple iPhone 3G

Since the 3G has been around for a while, we know a lot about it. It's a terrific Internet and e-mail gadget, and those features have only been improved by the new OS 3.0 update. It's a world-beating music and video player, and OS 3.0 tweaks have...

3G. True GPS. App Store adds hundreds of third-party programs. Voice quality is much improved from the original iPhone. No more recessed headphone jack. Surprisingly good battery life

An unknown number of buggy units have been released. Still missing video recording, voice dialing, stereo Bluetooth support, picture messaging, and document editing. Earbuds are still lousy ; Watch the iPhone 3G Video Review

The iPhone 3G represents the birth of a new computing platform. It's also one very cool phone. While it's not perfect, it makes other options on AT&T look tired.

iPhone 3G Preview - Buying Today Find out if you Should

We're hard at work on a full iPhone 3G review, but here are some of our initial impressions for those of you buying today. The big features are 3G and assisted GPS, as it turns out, their usefulness will really depend on how you use your phone.

The in-store activation was a pain. I was among the first 5 in the AT&T store I went to and our wait times varied greatly. The first person in was actually the last person out, how long the process took really depended on how good of a sales associate...
