Pixel 3 and 3 XL review: Google’s hardware takes a backseat to software

The Pixel 3 XL would be a superb big-screen phone if its notch weren't so polarizing. If you don't like the fact that this notch is bigger than rival phones and don't want to use the software fix to mask it, the Pixel 3 XL isn't for you. But if you can...

Brilliant display ; Powerful cameras ; Premium build ; Capable performance ; Clever Assistant features ; Cheaper than the competition

Not all software ready at launch

With the Pixel 3 and 3 XL, it doesn't feel like Google has made great leaps on hardware, nor is it making as big a splash as it did with last year's cameras. But it's definitely built a solid foundation for its software to shine on.

Pixel 3 review: The best Android phone of 2018

The Pixel 3's camera already makes it a standout -- but useful Google software elevates the phone even more.

The Pixel 3 takes brilliant photos, even in super low-light, with its single rear lens and it can capture wider selfie photos. It's water resistant, has wireless charging and it can screen unwanted calls.

The phone doesn't have expandable memory or a headphone jack. The shot-to-shot camera delay can be sluggish in certain modes.

The Pixel 3's truly exceptional cameras and AI-powered call screening give it an edge on the other great phones in 2018's crowded winners' circle.

Google Pixel 3

The Google Pixel 3 is the best small Android phone you can buy with the latest specs, impressive camera capabilities, and genuinely innovative AI features.

Compact. Fast performance. Beautiful OLED screen. Sharp front and rear camera with impressive low-light, zoom, and bokeh capabilities. Useful Google Assistant functionality. Highly optimized software with guaranteed updates.

No headphone jack or memory card slot.

The Google Pixel 3 has fast performance, excellent camera capabilities, and useful AI functionality that goes beyond what we're seeing in other Android flagships. It's $100 less than the larger Pixel 3 XL, doesn't have the distracting screen notch, and...

Google Pixel 3 XL review: Winning the game by rewriting the rules

Whether the Google Pixel 3 XL is the best Android phone is up for debate, but it's the most advanced Pixel ever, and that's what matters.

Incredibly fast and responsive. ; AI calling features are simply mind-blowing. ; The camera takes incredible pics even with lackluster hardware. ; Display is fantastic and a massive improvement over the 2 XL.

The notch is distracting and the design is bland. ; Camera could be even better with a dual lens. ; Battery life is just OK.

You need to ask yourself three questions before deciding to spend $899 or $999 on a the Pixel 3 XL:

Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL review: the best camera gets a better phone

Taking it up a notch

Radically improved screen ; Loud, clear front-facing speakers ; Excellent camera and wide angle selfie cam

Doofy notch ; Easily scratched rear finish ; Limited availability from US carriers and internationally

But if you want the best Android experience and the best camera you can get on a phone today, the Pixel 3 is it.

Google Pixel 3 XL Smartphone Review

Giant Pixel. Now in its third generation of Pixel smartphones, Google wants to tempt potential buyers away from its competitors with exclusive software features. However, affordable prices are a thing of the past as the Pixel 3 XL costs up to $999....

sturdy and stable case ; good cameras ; numerous LTE bands ; exclusive software features ; plenty of accessories ; colour accurate display ; no throttling under sustained load ; impressive speakers ; decent battery life

no face unlock ; some modern video features are missing ; expensive ; large notch ; mediocre call quality for a flagship ; inaccurate GPS

If you do not like notches, you can stop reading now. The Google Pixel 3 XL has a huge notch, which is already a step behind some of its competitors that have less obtrusive notches, in-screen fingerprint sensors and even a slide-out front-facing...

Google Pixel 3 Review: Picture greatness

It's a testament to just how high expectations are for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL that, even after months of the Google phones leaking, interest in them remains high. Now, the pair of Android 9 Pie handsets are finally headed to shelves, promising the...

Camera technology leads the pack ; Elegant, tactile glass & metal design ; Wireless charging is a welcome addition ; OLED screens look great

Pixel 3 XL notch is divisive ; More expensive than last year's Google phones ; Still no headphone jack

Google Pixel 3 review: Great things come in small(er) packages

Our Google Pixel 3 review takes a look at the smaller of Google's new flagship devices and finds that great things can still come in small(er) packages.

Outstanding camera, especially Night Sight ; Feels like a solid, well built smartphone ; Crisp, bright display ; Great performance ; Gesture navigation is quick once you get used to it ; Monthly security updates ; Unlimited online photo storage for two...

No microSD card slot ; Average/boring design (that works) ; Very occasional performance hiccup ; Included headphones uncomfortable and mediocre ; Top speaker isn't as loud as bottom ; Like other flagships, pricey ; No headphone jack

Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL Review

By this time of the year, we have a pretty good idea what to expect with top-of-the-line Android hardware, so does Google's smartest smartphones yet achieve supremacy through software?

The Google Android experience ; Superb camera ; Buttery-smooth performance ; Innovative features like call screening and duplex

Not the fanciest design possible ; Video recording could be better ; Verizon-exclusive
