Huawei Mate 9 review

Huawei's Mate 9 is an incredible big-screen behemoth that'll make you forget all about the Note 7.

Surprisingly compact body ; Amazing dual-lens Leica camera ; Revised and improved software ; Alexa support ; Big battery

Not water-resistant ; No U.S. release date yet ; Uninspired design

It’s a giant smartphone that doesn’t feel like a big smartphone when you pick it up. We love the camera’s ability to inspire and the sheer processing power, but perhaps most of all, it’s the software alterations that make the Mate 9 the first Huawei...

Huawei Mate 9 review: Time-saver edition

Huawei continues its rise in the smartphone maker ranks, and the Mate 9 is its latest flagship phablet. As such, it shows everything the company is currently capable of, both in terms of design and hardware.

Top quality aluminum unibody is both great to look at and premium to the touch ; Excellent bright and contrasty display, very good in sunlight too ; Solid battery life, excellent at web browsing, very good at video playback ; Class-leading CPU...

Pros and cons: Our quick verdict on the Huawei Mate 9

Huawei has set itself apart from its competitors by making an actually smart phone that can adjust its performance based on your habits. The Mate 9's machine-learning algorithm prioritizes resources to apps that it anticipates you'll use, making your...

Unique machine learning algorithm ; Impressively thin for such a large-screen device ; Long battery life ; Brisk performance ; Large, bright display ; Actually has a headphone jack

Only supports GSM carriers ; Mediocre camera quality in low light ; Polarizing skin will turn off Android purists

Miss your Note 7? This is the big-screened phone to buy

With a huge, bright screen, all-day battery, good camera and power to spare, the Huawei Mate 9 is a large-screen phone for anyone.

The Huawei Mate 9 has more power than you'll need, a camera that's great for arty shots and a battery that won't quit on you by dinner.

Its screen is only full HD and its design is utterly forgettable.

It doesn't have the flame-prone Note 7's beautiful lines and curves, but if you're after a high-performance big-screened phone that won't set your pants on fire, the Mate 9 is a great option.

Huawei Mate 9

If you think bigger is better, the Huawei Mate 9 fills the gap for super-big-screen Android phones in the US.

Big screen. Dual cameras for sharper images. Large battery. IR blaster.

Screen resolution is relatively low.

The Mate 9's big, low-resolution screen may appeal to an older crowd—for instance, the folks who subscribe to Consumer Cellular (which also carried the earlier Ascend Mate 2). If Huawei can find a good partner and attach a reasonable price to the Mate...

The Huawei Mate 9 Review

Flagship phones give manufacturers the opportunity to showcase their latest technology, and because they attract attention and generate buzz, they help raise brand awareness. For Huawei, currently the world's third largest smartphone producer by market...

The Mate 9 still is not perfect, but it improves on the Mate 8’s core strengths while fixing some of its issues. If you’re looking for a phone with a big screen, the Mate 9 is definitely worth consideration.

Huawei Mate 9 Phablet Review

Think big! You should have a look at Huawei's latest product if you like big high-end phablets. Besides the new Kirin 960 SoC, you get a dual-camera, modern Android 7.0 with the new EMUI 5.0 as well as a big battery. The highlight is a 5.9-inch IPS...

fast camera ; great camera with hybrid zoom ; fast storage ; compact and appealing design ; up to three years warranty ; LTE Cat. 11 ; wide frequency coverage ; great voice quality with noise suppression ; App cloning ; IR blaster ; dual-SIM ...

... but only as hybrid slot ; microSD-cards cannot be formatted as internal storage ; no App2SD ; clattering power adapter ; slow SD slot ; mediocre WiFi performance

Huawei's Mate 9 is a strict evolution of its high-end phablet. It is another step ahead in terms of features and performance, and it is still one of the biggest devices in this class, even though it now has a slightly smaller screen. Despite the size,...

Huawei Mate 9 Review

The smartphone market, especially in the US, is at a turning point in history. Olympus has fallen and the towering Titans are stumbling. This has left the land open for explorers and conquerors or to put it less poetically, other smartphone players are...

Great performance from Kirin 960 processor ; Impressive camera with a very functional 2x zoom ; Solid, quality all-metal unibody build

Could probably do with a higher res display at its size (Pro version) ; Proprietary fast charging tech means no third party accessories
