Samsung Galaxy Note 5 review: Pen-friendly superphone packs big screen -- and big price

 

The Note 5 boasts a redesigned stylus and a giant screen -- and a price tag to match. It has a few flaws, and this modest upgrade of last year's Note will feel the heat from a growing battalion of cheaper competitors.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 has an eye-catching design and high-end hardware, and it takes great outdoor photos. Using the stylus has never felt better and battery life is terrific.

With a nonremovable battery and no external storage option, the Note 5 strips away some of last year's features. It's pricey compared with large-screen competitors like Motorola's Moto X Pure.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 5 is excellent overall, and the only phone to buy if you want to write by hand. However, you'll pay a huge premium for a modest upgrade from last year's model, and less pricey competitors will satisfy many.

The Galaxy Note 5 packs incredible processing power and puts it behind the best display you can get. But this iteration of Samsung's top phablet comes with compromises.

Best phone screen available. Octo-core Samsung Exynos 7420 processor. Excellent battery life. S Pen is still unique among phablets.

Battery is not removable. No card slot for storage expansion. Some gimmicky features.
