ZTE Axon 40 Ultra review

When did we decide that the 24-26mm focal length was the 'default' one for 'main' cameras on smartphones? And with the proliferation of ultrawide cameras...

Standout rear design, minimal bezels, under-display selfie camera makes for a clean display.

No IP rating for dust and water protection.

But it's the camera that is why the Axon 40 Ultra exists, and it's special enough blind you to the phone's shortcomings. The competitive price doesn't hurt either.

ZTE Axon 40 Ultra review: all that glitters is not gold

ZTE's most beefed-up offering under the Axon lineup is here, and it is looking good. With such beautiful aesthetics and powerful internals, it's a shame that the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra falls short in so ma This might as well be a gaming phone in disguise.

Luxurious construction ; Drop-dead gorgeous display with UDC ; Snappy 120Hz refresh rate ; Cooling system with SD 8 Gen 1 work like magic ; Stellar battery life with 65W charging ; Perfect for gaming and media consumption ; DTS: X Ultra audio and...

Triple 64MP lenses shoot inconsistent photos ; No wireless charging ; Lacks water and dust resistance ; Front camera has a long way to go

It's sleek, it's upscale, it's fast. The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra packs some powerful hardware, kept in check by a dedicated cooling system. You'll enjoy that edge-to-edge 120Hz AMOLED panel with an invisible front camera under the screen. Weirdly, it also...

ZTE Axon 40 Ultra review: Can this flagship compete with Android’s best phones?

The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra proves to be a bargain of a flagship smartphone, but its under-display camera is both a fun gimmick and its Achilles' Heel.

That we’re at least comparing the ZTE Axon 40 Ultra to these top smartphones bodes well for ZTE’s phone-making prowess. Now if only the company could take the next step by fixing its flawed under-display camera, we’d be getting somewhere.

ZTE Axon 40 Ultra review: An 'ultra' smartphone for less

Impressive hardware with a few notable flaws

Excellent display quality and smoothness ; Sturdy feel ; Comprehensive customization ; Extremely fast USB-PD charging

Frustrating Android skin ; Terrible under-display selfie camera ; Mediocre speaker quality

The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra is definitely worth considering . It feels great, looks great, and takes great pictures as long (as they aren’t selfies or mega-zooms). The big battery and fast charging are exactly what you’d expect out of an $899 smartphone, and...

ZTE Axon 40 Ultra

The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra displays a lot of potential, offering up a sleek design, an excellent screen, a top-tier processor and good battery life. However,

Strong performance ; Excellent screen ; Decent battery life

Poor selfie camera

The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra displays a lot of potential, offering up a sleek design, an excellent screen, a top-tier processor and good battery life. However, the quirky under-display selfie camera is flat-out poor.

REVIEW: The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra Is Great, But Don't Buy It - REVIEW: The ZTE Axon 40 Ultra Is Great, But Don’t Buy It

ZTE is a brand of phone you may not have heard of. Or if you have, it's one that's popped up in the news after it joined the banned device list in the US, UK and Australia, restricting them from being used in government. ZTE in fact, alongside Huawei,...

- Gorgeous Screen ; - Industry Leading Processor ; - Premium Finish and Build ; - Stunning Camera with Powerful Zoom ; - Charges Fast ; - Cheap Price Tag

- Security Issues ; - Doesn't Meet Local Requirements ; - Can't be purchased locally ; - 1x Camera Setting Annoying Zoomed ; - No Local Charger ; - Horrid Selfie Camera

In China, where the phone was built and designed for, where it meets local standards and there is considerable support in terms of cases and accessories for ZTE phone, the Axon 40 Ultra is probably a fantastic buy. It has industry leading specs and a...
