Canon Rebel T2i / 550D receives plaudit-heavy reviews

We've seen plenty of the headline 1080p / 30fps video mode on the Rebel T2i, but what's been missing till now are the equally comprehensive reviews of this new...

Canon EOS Rebel T2i

It's tempting to refer to Canon's T2i--a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) model--as an evolutionary upgrade from its predecessor, last year's Canon EOS Rebel T1i. That is, until you review the new camera's pictures and video on your computer screen....

LCD with high resolution and new 3:2 dimension ; Excellent software for both Mac and Windows ; Improved video mode with external mic capability ; Higher resolution than previous Rebel cameras ; Higher-quality images and video than older Rebels ; Snappy...

Light plastic feel ; Expensive for entry-level camera kit

Canon's incremental refinements to this Rebel add up to both improved image quality and movie recording that is a notable step forward.

Review: Canon Rebel T2i

Canon's entry-level Rebel has more megapixels, better noise reduction and full HD video.

Image-stabilized kit lens. Three-inch 3:2 aspect ratio LCD with a slightly greater viewing angle than the old version. Dedicated Live View/Movie Record button. Quick Control Screen. External microphone jack. Quicktime H.264 video format. SD memory-card...

Lack of quick control wheel (you have to get Canon’s 7D or a higher model to have one). Bothersome autofocus assist flash. Build quality not as robust as feature set

Canon EOS Rebel T2i review: Canon EOS Rebel T2i

Canon EOS Rebel T2i

Fast performance; excellent photo quality; above average video-capture quality.

Annoying viewfinder; irritating control layout for video capture.

A great follow-up to the T1i, if you want the best photo and video quality in a dSLR for less than $1,000, the Canon EOS Rebel T2i is hard to beat.

Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i Review

The Canon EOS 550D is a difficult product to categorize. Ostensibly designed to appeal to first-time DSLR buyers and enthusiasts, it offers a lot more technology, and at a higher price, than we might expect for a camera aimed squarely at this sector....

Excellent detail and resolution (especially in raw mode) ; Lovely new LCD screen - the 3:2 format really makes a difference ; Capable, flexible AF system in both phase-detection and live view modes ; High-spec video mode, including external microphone...

Auto Lighting Optimizer's effect is subtle to the point of being unnoticeable ; No rear control dial (as found on higher-end Canon bodies) ; Entry-level ergonomics won't suit everyone (the EOS 50D and 7D just feel nicer) ; No in-camera raw conversion...

All in all, the EOS 550D is the most compelling DSLR of its class that we've ever tested. It is hard to imagine how much more we might realistically expect from a product of this type, and although the improvements that Canon has made over the EOS 500D...

Canon EOS Rebel T2i

Canon has done it again. Last year the Canon EOS Rebel T1i ($899.99, ) along with the Nikon D5000 ($729.95, ) led the D-SLR revolution by being the first sub-$1,000 models to offer high-definition video. Capture is limited to 720p, but both cameras are...

Top-notch images. 18-MP resolution. Low noise levels through ISO 3200. Largest and sharpest LCD available on a D-SLR. Multiple HD video-capture modes. Manual exposure control available during video capture. Compatible with SDXC memory cards. HDMI-CEC...

Video recording is not as intuitive as with a dedicated camcorder. Frames-per-second capture is slower than the competition.

The Canon EOS Rebel T2i pumps out beautiful pictures and boasts full-featured 1080p video recording options that were previously only available with D-SLRs twice its price.

Canon EOS 500D (Digital Rebel T1i / Kiss X3 Digital) Review

Just 14 months after the launch of the EOS Rebel XSi (450D), Canon has unveiled its latest model, the Rebel T1i (500D). It's the fifth generation of Rebel and enters the market at a difficult time - in the midst of a global economic downturn and...

Good resolution and detailed output (but only very marginally better than 450D) Decent (but not 'best in class') high ISO JPEG performance Extended ISO speed up to 12800 (not great quality but it's there for emergencies) Good quality HD video (but...

Visibly more noise in RAW files than some of the competition Slightly less highlight range in JPGs than the competition Relatively limited RAW headroom, channel clipping means color accuracy can often not be maintained when recovering clipped areas in...

The EOS 500D is the latest incarnation of a highly successful line of cameras and although the 'entry level' market segment is these days much more crowded than it used to be, we would be very surprised if the new model would not sell like hotcakes.
