Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital Elph

A reliable pocket camera for casual snapshot takers.

Ultracompact; solid battery life; excellent burst capabilities; low shutter lag; versatile movie mode.

Few manual controls or scene modes; inaccurate viewfinder with no diopter adjustment.

Putting excellent performance in an ultracompact package, the SD300 should please photographers who don't want manual controls or plentiful scene modes.

Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital Elph

Megapixels: 4, Maximum Resolution: 2272 x 1704 pixels, Included Memory Amount: 16 MB, Included Memory: Media Card, ...

Excellent daylight images and very good flash shots. Good menus. Tiny and tough.

Mediocre recycle times. Smallish LCD, Optical viewfinder placement could be better.

The Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital Elph takes great pictures, despite its tiny size. It's stylish, built like a very small tank, and fun to use.

Canon PowerShot SD300

Announced at the end of September 2004, the SD300 (which goes by the names of Digital Ixus 40 in Europe and IXY DIGITAL 50 in Japan) is the latest in a long line of ultra-compact 'ELPH' or 'IXUS' cameras stretching back to early 2000 (and a lot farther...

Incredibly compact design, Slim enough for any pocket or purse, Beautifully built and all-metal construction, Excellent color, Manual (custom) white balance, Very good resolution, Good exposure and generally very reliable focus, Good flash performance...

Strong purple fringing, Some edge softness at wide angle/max aperture, Battery life when using LCD not fantastic, Occasional lens flare, No exposure information in record or playback mode, Very little manual control

In an ideal world buying an ultra compact camera would not involve any compromise at all.

Canon PowerShot SD300

Slightly smaller than many preceding Canon Digital ELPH models, the PowerShot SD300 features the great looks and sharp design that are the ELPH signature. Very compact and quick on the draw (thanks to a smoothly operating retractable lens design), the...

Because the ELPH line capitalizes on ease of use, exposure control is typically automatic, increasing the line's appeal to point-and-shoot users. The SD300 sticks to this trend, with a series of unique Scene modes, but does provide a handful of manual...

Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital ELPH

The old Digital ELPHs were my favorite point-and-shoot cameras -- how does this all new, ultra-thin model compare? Find out now

Very good photo quality (though see issues below) ; Ultra-thin, stylish metal body ; Robust performance ; Excellent continuous shooting mode (with the right memory card) ; First-rate movie mode (finally!) ; Big LCD for a small camera ; AF-assist lamp ;...

Softness around edges and corners of photos; above average purple fringing, as well ; Redeye ; Some vignetting, especially in flash shots ; Cheap plastic door over memory card / battery compartment ; LCD doesn't "gain up" very much in low light ; Can't...

Despite its flaws, I do like the SD300 -- quite a lot in fact. It seems to have the same image quality problems as the PowerShot S60 and S70, which use the same UA lens technology. For those folks printing photos smaller than 8 x 10, I don't think the...

Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital ELPH Camera Review

The SD300 is a near perfect digital camera. It's small enough to be taken anywhere and used anytime. It offers enough users adjustable features to keep a serious photographer happy and it's auto mode allows anyone to take great pictures.

Really fast start up time, Great picture quality, 30fps video at 640x480 resolution with sound, Fit in your shirt pocket - take it anywhere

Like all subcompact digital cameras, serious red-eye issues

Manual mode is not really a true manual mode since the PowerShot SD300 always controls aperture and shutter speed. However, there are enough manual features on the camera to keep most of the "prosumer" from getting bored. Users have the ability to...

PowerShot SD300

This 5-mexapixel camera is a solid shooter, but it's also pricey while its images suffer from noise and fringing.

Excellent color and detail ; fast continuous mode ; good video quality ; 2-inch LCD ; easy menus ; printed manual

Noise ; pronounced blue fringe ; expensive

Neatly arranged controls, a bright 2-inch LCD, and a responsive thumb pad make this camera's menus easy to navigate. There's no live histogram, but you can view a histogram to check exposure in Playback mode
