Fujifilm FinePix S5100

It's speedy and takes excellent pictures with a minimum of fuss, and it would be an unbeatable value if it had antishake technology.

Affordable, compact and speedy. Takes bright, crisp, and well-exposed pictures. RAW support and an AF assist lamp.

Lacks important refinements, like antishake technology, a real-time histogram, and a hot shoe. Manual focus is inconvenient to use. Small (1.5-inch) LCD. Uses less common xD memory format. Charger and rechargeable batteries not included.

When we reviewed the S5500/5100's predecessor a year ago, Phil commented 'Throughout my time with the S5000 I was left wondering what would have been like had Fujifilm used a standard four or five megapixel CCD'.

Fujifilm Finepix S5500 Review

The recommended retail price of the Fujifilm Finepix S5500 in the UK is £299.99 and in the US it is $399.99

The FujiFilm Finepix S5500 Zoom is a solid update of what was already a good digital camera, the 3 megapixel S5000. The new S5500 adds a number of improvements which although not crucial are still very welcome - these include ISO speeds of 64 and 100...

Digital Cameras - Fuji FinePix S5100 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

The previous Fuji FinePix 2800 and 3800 Zoom cameras were exceptional values for the money, and the updated Fuji FinePix S5100 offers the same great value with the addition of a 4.0-megapixel CCD and a longer 10x zoom lens. The S5100's higher...

Fuji FinePix S5100

There are a ton of ultra zoom cameras on the market. How does the SLR-like S5100 compare? Find out now in our review

Good photo quality for the most part ; Stylish, mini-SLR design ; Full manual controls (though somewhat inflexible) ; AF-assist lamp ; Great redeye test performance ; Excellent movie mode ; Supports conversion lenses ; Great battery life ; RAW image...

Noticeable vignetting in images ; Noise levels a little above average ; Small LCD, low res EVF; both are hard to see in low light ; Poor macro test performance ; Manual focus feature poorly implemented ; Full shutter speed range only available in "M"...

Overall I recommend the S5100 as a good, low-cost ultra zoom camera. Do note that it doesn't have an image stabilizer, which comes in handy for those long telephoto shots, but few cameras in this category have that feature at this point.

Fuji FinePix S5500

One of the first things that hit you removing the S5500 from its box is its size; it's very compact and its styling makes its handling extremely accomplished. Rubberised grips on its key handling surfaces - the right hand grip for example - make it...

Design and handling are great, the lens offers plenty of scope and the colour screen is small but (almost) perfectly formed.

The EVF is poor and the camera eats alkaline AA batteries faster than a swarm of locusts.

The 5500's a pleasing little camera (bar the EVF) that rewards your efforts with nice shots. The AF is a tad slow for my liking and the lack of image stabilization means, at longer focal lengths, camera shake rears its ugly head; a tripod will be a...
