HP Photosmart R817 review

HP Photosmart R817

5X optical zoom; context-sensitive advice; Adaptive Lighting feature; manual exposure modes; postcapture red-eye removal; compatible with HP's Instant Share system.

Excessive visual noise in some photos; flimsy lens cover; long recharge time for battery; no optical viewfinder.

The compact HP Photosmart R817 combines some unusual photo-enhancement technologies with a strong feature set for both novices and experienced photographers.

HP Photosmart R817

It's a very good compact camera for beginners, and we really like the 5X optical zoom. We just wish performance was better.

Good image quality and sharpness. Good zoom range for a compact camera.

Slow performance. Shutter lag.

HP Photosmart R817 Camera

With its small size and stainless steel shell, HP's Photosmart R817 bears a strong family resemblance to its sibling, the Photosmart R717, a Best Buy recipient. The $349, 5.1-megapixel R817 costs more and has fewer megapixels than the $300,...

In-camera red-eye reduction 5X zoom

Below-average image quality Low battery life

The camera runs on a lithium-ion battery that lasted for only 175 shots between charges in our tests. The only way to charge it is by first attaching the camera to the docking cradle. The cradle has a USB port for printing and uploading your photos,...

In-camera red-eye reduction ; 5X zoom

Below-average image quality ; Low battery life

Offers in-camera red-eye reduction like the similar R717, plus a more powerful zoom, but image quality was less impressive.

HP Photosmart R817 Review

The HP Photosmart R817 is HP's latest digital camera and it attempts to emulate the success of the well-received R707 and R717 models. Despite the higher model number, the HP R817 actually has less megapixels (5 rather than 6) and a smaller image...

The HP Photosmart R817 seems to have everything going for it. Small, compact and very stylish body, lots of innovative features like Adaptive Lighting that really make a difference, full manual controls and a 5x optical zoom lens that sets it apart...

HP Photosmart R817 Digital Camera Review

The HP Photosmart R817 will satisfy families looking for an easy-to-use point and shoot digital camera.

Great ergonomics and user interface ; Easy to use ; Excellent integration of the camera with computers, printers, online services, and television with the right accessories ; 5x optical lens gets you up close

Image noise is still moderately high ; QVGA movie mode is weak

The R817 is the successor the R717. While the R817 has one fewer megapixels, the addition of the 5x optical Pentax lens and refined user interface make up for it. While the Pentax lens may take slightly sharper photos, noise continues to be an issue...

HP Photosmart R817 review

Less like a camera and more like a computer

Excellent fetaures ; Good build quality ; Accurate contrast and colour rendition

Some noise at higher sensitivities ; Layout can cause problems

Bristling with high-tech features, our review sample nevertheless struggled with some of the basics, like producing pictures which are consistently sharp

HP R817 Digital Camera

Pocket-lint is among the first in Europe to get access to the new R817 5 megapixel digital camera from HP. So does it build on the popular R707 range or should Hewlett Packard stick to the photo printers and business desktop machines? We climbed a...

Styling isn't great, 32Mb of memory means you'll have to buy an SD card from the start

So should you be ditching the Canon compact and becoming a HP photographer? If you are new to digital photography it's certainly worth a look as the consumer angle is very refreshing. The camera will happily give you image advice on the shots you've...
