Konica Minolta's new six megapixel DiMAGE G600

Steve's Digicams has a review of Konica Minolta's affordable new six megapixel DiMAGE G600, which besides sporting a 3x optical zoom lens (which are distressingly commonplace these days - can't someone bump it up'), has a start-up time of just 1.3...

Konica Minolta Dimage G600

Compact size; solid metal construction; low-noise low-light exposures; dual storage-card slots; long battery life.

No battery latch; small optical viewfinder; uncomfortable front design.

An above-average choice for both novices and photo buffs.

Konica Minolta DiMage G600

Least-expensive 6-megapixel camera we've tested. Solid feel, easy to shoot with. Sharp images. Very good menu structure and documentation. Accepts SD/MMC and Memory Stick media.

Flash shots have a green cast, with muddy shadows. Meager video capabilities. Not enough analog controls, and only one preset.

This camera gets full marks for fun factor, style and performance, but has worse image quality than its 3.2 MP predecessor. The lack of a lens cap is worrisome.

Equipped with a telescoping, 3x, 8-24mm Hexanon lens (39-117mm 35mm equivalent), the G600's tiny size doesn't compromise its optics. Focus remains under automatic control, and ranges from 1.64 feet (0.5 meters) to infinity in normal mode, and from 2.36...

A camera that caters very well to advanced amateurs and more serious photographers, it offers almost a full range of manual controls, but lacks some of the presets that please beginners.

Compact, very fast, great pictures, manual modes

No continuous shot function, no bracketing or manual white balance controls

KONICA MINOLTA DiMAGE G600 ]

The goods: The Konica Minolta is a 6 megapixel camera that fits in between the simple point and shoot consumer cameras and the digicams that offer greater manual control of functions.

The macro mode on the G600 is very good, delivering well exposed and pin sharp close-ups. If photographing flowers is a priority then the Minolta is the camera for the job

The manual controls, which are limited, are not immediately accessible by external buttons and knobs. Making manual selections of ISO speed or shutter speed must be done by plunging into non-intuitive menu settings. Most people will find that manual...

The natural competitors of the Konica Minolta G600 are the Canon Powershot S60 and the Olympus C-60. The Canon is a 5mp camera and the Olympus is 6. The Canon and Olympus have more easily accessible manual controls which will appeal to some customers...
