Samsung Pro815

Samsung takes a hit-or-miss approach when it comes to the big and bulky Pro815, which is why this superzoom looks good on paper but doesn't quite deliver the goods.

Decent image quality. Longest zoom and biggest LCD for a fixed-lens point-and-shoot digital camera. Wide-angle end of the zoom range reaches 28mm. Includes manual-focus ring. Lots of options.

Some shutter lag in non-flash situations. Big and bulky. No image stabilization. Limited to 30-second video clips.

Samsung DigiMax Pro 815

The $700 (as of August 25, 2006) Samsung Pro815 is a dream camera for serious photographers. This bulky 8-megapixel camera looks like a digital SLR and packs a multitude of features and settings for the ultimate in control over your pictures.

Huge 3.5-inch LCD and 15X zoom ; Tons of manual controls

Lacks image stabilization

Pro815 lives up to its name, with many controls, a huge 3.5-inch LCD, and massive 15X zoom. No image stabilization, though.

Samsung Digimax Pro 815 review: Samsung Digimax Pro 815

Samsung Digimax Pro 815

15X optical zoom lens; 3.5-inch LCD; top mounted color LCD; raw and TIFF capture.

Large; heavy; excessive noise at ISO 200 and above; tops out at ISO 400; TIFF and raw write times are painfully slow.

Samsung's Digimax Pro 815 has impressive features, but heavy noise and slow performance outweigh its advantages.

Samsung Pro815 Review

Samsung officially announced its first SLR-styled digital camera, the Pro815, an 8 megapixel, 15x zoom model back in June, but it didn't actually arrive until the late autumn. It's targeted at enthusiasts and boasts a lot of 'world firsts' including...

Huge 28-420mm equivalent zoom range with mechanical zoom ring Excellent edge-to-edge results across the zoom range Good resolution - especially in raw mode Fairly light-handed noise reduction at higher ISO settings Large, bright 3.5-inch screen Useful...

Long shutter lag Focusing can feel slow 640 x 480 movies at 25 fps maximum clip length of 30 secs Focus hunts - and often fails - at long end of zoom, especially in low light JPEG processing doesn't make the most of the lens, smearing of low contrast...

Samsung has arrived at the super zoom / bridge camera party very late, but it has certainly made quite an entrance. The Pro815's designers obviously decided that the key to success was to take the successful formula established by the likes of...

SLR-style camera with giant LCD and 15X optical zoom

Measuring 6.1 x 5.4 x 3.4 inches it's certainly as big as a SLR and definitely looks like a SLR down to the overall design and matte-black body, but it's not a single lens reflex.

Huge 3.5-inch primary LCD makes camera a pleasure to use, Excellent 28-420 mm provides wide angle to massive zoom, Very powerful battery lasts a long time, Secondary LCD on top allows hip-level shooting, Excellent hi-res electronic viewfinder, Stereo...

No true image stabilization, Only goes up to ISO 800, Needlessly sparse menus, almost no online help, Button labeling hard to see, Included software marginal, Large and heavy

Samsung's new Digimax Pro 815

Zoom Zoom Zoom Rumors of a Samsung digital SLR have been exaggerated. But they do have a new 8MP high-end EVF called the Digimax Pro 815 ($849 list). You can't remove its 15X optical zoom (28-420mm equiv.), f/2.2-4.6 Schneider-Kreuznach lens, but rings...

Samsung Pro815 Pro Review

The Pro 815 is the first Samsung digital camera I've had the chance to use, and I'm frankly amazed at what this baby can do. I carried it around in my briefcase and tried it in distinctly different settings. I took it to restaurants, medical...

Huge 3.5-inch, 235K rear-panel LCD display, 1.4-inch top panel LCD for waist viewing, Kitchen sink of photo features, Close "Super-Macro" Setting, Ultra-sharp 28-420mm Schneider (35mm equivalent) zoom lens, High Speed Shutter Mode, Diopter adjustment...

No optical viewfinder, No image stabilization, Small sensor which yields high noise levels over ISO 200, Poorly organized manual without index, Slow learning curve, Complicated menu and controls, As big and bulky as a pro dSLR, Ultra slow auto focus at...

Once I mastered it, I was able to give the Samsung Pro815 a hearty thumbs-up. I love the big, sharp, telephoto zoom lens and the huge rear-panel LCD. The Pro815 provides many of the tools I require in an all-in-one, super-zoom digital camera: easy...
