Samsung WB850F: Feature-Filled 21X Pocket Zoom Has Connections

A few years ago, a pocketable camera loaded with this many features would impossible to find. The Samsung WB850F ($350 as of August 6, 2012) boasts a 21X-optical-zoom lens, Wi-Fi sharing capabilities, GPS with in-camera mapping, and a 10-fps burst mode...

Wi-Fi sharing features and in-camera GPS/mapping ; Manual controls and creative filters ; 21X optical zoom lens (23mm to 483mm) ; Good image quality at wide-angle to midzoom

GPS features aren't preloaded on camera ; Laggy reaction time when switching modes ; Blurry long-zoom and low-light shots ; Battery is charged inside the camera

The feature-loaded, 21X-zoom Samsung WB850F is the best Wi-Fi camera we've reviewed, but a few usability hangups keep it from a higher ranking.

Samsung WB850F (with Wi-Fi) review

There are certainly plenty of compact megazooms to pick from these days, but the Samsung WB850F stands out for a few reasons.

The Samsung WB850F is a feature-packed compact megazoom with a versatile lens, very good picture quality, and excellent Wi-Fi capabilities.

The WB850F's shooting performance is a bit mixed, its battery life is mediocre, and its interface, while very good, can take some time to learn.

For snapshooters looking to enter the world of connected cameras, the 21x zoom Samsung WB850F is a good place to start.

Samsung WB850F

The Samsung WB850F is a compact superzoom camera with a wider-than-average lens, GPS, and Wi-Fi, but its a little slow to start and shoot, and image quality suffers at higher ISO settings.

Sharp lens. Wi-Fi. GPS. Long zoom range. Crisp OLED display.

Slow to start and shoot. Loss of detail at higher ISOs. Poorly placed flash release.

Performance and Conclusions The WB850F takes a full 2.4 seconds to start and shoot, can grab an 8-shot burst of photos at 10, 5, or 3 frames per second, and manages a short 0.2-second shutter lag. The Canon PowerShot SX260 HS matches the shutter lag,...

Samsung WB850F

While our test results suggest excellence, real-world shots tell a different story

Generally attractive daylight shots; 10fps burst shooting

Pixelation, even at ISO 100; Sharpness is faked by software

This is one of those tricky situations where the raw test scores might have you believing this camera is something it’s not. While the WB850F posted some very impressive noise and resolution scores, in practice, the same internal software that...

Smarter than the average camera

Good low ISO image quality ; Excellent zoom range ; Full manual control ; Wi-Fi enabled

Reds oversaturated ; Battery life reduced with GPS ; GPS slow to lock on ; No raw shooting

The 16.2MP Samsung WB850F is part of Samsung's Smart Camera range of compact cameras that have built-in Wi-Fi to enable images to be shared direct from the camera.
