Sony Alpha DSLR-A700

Sony's DSLR-A700 takes superb low-light photos, but overall, there are better options for the price.

Low noise at high ISOs (excels at low-light shooting). Fast operation. HDMI out. Includes a remote control.

Expensive for what you get. Soft images. Dull design. LCD doesn't support Live View. No video capability.

DSLR-A700

First impressions of the Alpha DSLR-A700, Sony's $1900 (as of 12/14/2007), 12-megapixel digital single-lens reflex camera, brings to mind terms like "massive," "brick-like," and "complex." With its deep right-hand grip and 2.75-pound weight (which...

Sturdy magnesium body Extensive exposure controls

Inconsistencies with auto white balance Mediocre software bundle

With its sharp, 12-megapixel imaging and with more exposure controls than most photographers--amateur or professional--will likely use, the beefy and finely designed A700 rises to nearly pro-level photography, making it well worth its $1900 price tag....

Sony Alpha DSLR-A700

Update: The noise sections of this review (and the conclusions) were updated February 2009 to reflect significant changes in the way noise reduction works with raw files.

Good detail at lower sensitivities, very slightly more than ten megapixels but no massive gain ; Low noise at higher sensitivities although at the expense of detail (perhaps too much luminance NR) ; Excellent dynamic range at ISO 200 (more highlight...

Noise reduction settings are applied to raw as well as JPEG files. Would be preferable if they affected JPEG only (as is normal practice). Kudos to Sony for updating the firmware to allow you to actually turn it off at all though ; Base sensitivity...

The Alpha 700 was introduced as a complementary model to the Alpha 100; aimed more at the serious amateur and semi-professional photographer it enters a segment of the market which is buzzing with new models (EOS 40D, D300 and E-3). The A700 clearly...

Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 Review

It's been almost two years since Konica Minolta pulled out of the photo business and transferred its entire camera division to Sony, and well over a year since the first Sony DSLR (the DSLR-A100) was announced. Two years is a long time in the digital...

Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 review: Sony Alpha DSLR-A700

Sony Alpha DSLR-A700

Exceptionally streamlined, comfortable shooting design; broad, functional feature set, including sensor-shift image stabilizer; excellent photo quality; fast burst-shooting performance.

A few design quirks.

A top-of-the-line amateur digital SLR camera, the Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 will delight Konica Minolta diehards and makes a great choice if you don't already have a stake in other lens systems.

Sony DSLR-A700

The alpha 700 accepts Minolta a-mount lenses, Sony's "G" Series lenses with motorized auto focusing and Sony's wide-aperture zoom lenses. A new APS-C size, CMOS imager with on-chip noise-canceling provides the quality you need to make the most of all...

Sony Alpha 700 review

Finally Sony are making good their promise to bring a real Alpha system on the market that not only appeals to the amateur but the semi-pro and even the professional photographer alike with the introduction of the Sony Alpha 700. I do not wish to claim...

Sony makes a real statement to the competitor with the Sony Alpha 700 digital SLR camera. Time to do some serious business! Firstly the housing is perfectly finished and the camera has an ideal hand-fit. The somewhat heavier weight is obvious and adds...

Sony A700 Review

The Sony A700 is the second DSLR camera from Sony, a more complex model than the original A100 that is aimed at the prosumer photographer. The Sony A700 bears more than a passing resemblance to the Konica Minolta Maxxum / Dynax 7D DSLR, which is...

Offering a compelling combination of intuitive design and handling, sophisticated functionality and excellent image quality, the Sony A700 is an easy DSLR camera to recommend. Being based so clearly upon a previous Konica Minolta camera has given Sony...

Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 Digital Camera - Hands-On Preview - The Imaging Resource!

Now that the din of Canon and Nikon fans has quieted from last month's announcements, Sony and Minolta fans have something to smile about: the Sony A700. I longed for the next Alpha when I reviewed the first Sony Alpha A100. Though impressive, it...
