Sony Alpha NEX-7 mirrorless camera review

Sony's NEX-7 is the company's best mirrorless camera yet, offering true DSLR image quality in a compact body.

Review: Sony NEX-7

The 24-megapixel APS-C sensor in this camera produces excellent stills and videos, with details that hold up even when you zoom all the way in.

One of the most customizable models on the market. Sparkling 1080p video at 60 fps

Software menu is a bit of a dog’s breakfast. Flimsy pop-up flash. At least 0 too expensive

Sony Alpha NEX-7

Sony's high-end mirrorless camera, the Alpha NEX-7 is a top performer brimming with features, but a camera of this caliber deserves a better kit lens.

Compact body. 24-megapixel resolution. Articulating LCD. Crisp OLED EVF. Built-in flash. 1080p60 video recording.

So-so kit lens. Proprietary hot shoe. Not as good at high ISO as other NEX cameras. Easy to start recording video unintentionally.

If you're thinking about buying the camera as a digital back for your older lenses, there is a neat feature called Focus Peaking that should help you nail focus—adapted lenses won't autofocus unless you're using Minolta Maxxum or Sony Alpha glass using...

Sony Alpha NEX-7 review: Sony Alpha NEX-7

Sony Alpha NEX-7

The ; delivers excellent raw photo and solid video quality in a package that's beautifully and functionally designed, yet relatively compact. Though expensive for an essentially nonprofessional camera, it doesn't seem overpriced.

As with many competing products, the camera's JPEG algorithms need some optimization, some aspects of operation feel a little laggy, and it's missing some useful features.

With a lot to like and just a little to dislike, the Sony Alpha NEX-7 comes up a winner, albeit an expensive one.

Sony NEX-7 review

In the middle ground between DSLRs and point-and-shoot lies a vast plain filled with all manner of tweener cameras, in all variants of shape, size, price, and quality. Until now, no one has nailed...

Excellent pictures and video ; Fast performance ; Very easy to use

Still doesn't have DSLR-level manual control ; OLED viewfinder is mediocre ; Lens ecosystem isn't as good as Nikon or Canon

If you're buying a camera soon, look long and hard at the NEX-7

Sony Alpha NEX-7

When Sony first introduced its range of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras in May 2010, the company was very clear about who it thought would buy the NEX-5 and its near-identical-twin NEX-3. Small cameras with APS-C sensors, we were told, would...

Three dial interface offers extensive fingertip control ; Superb build quality ; Excellent 2.4 million-dot OLED EVF in compact, slimline body ; 920K dot tilting rear screen ; Very high-resolution 24MP CMOS sensor with impressive high-ISO performance ;...

Out-of-camera JPEGs don't show off the 24MP sensor to its best extent ; Auto ISO limited to maximum of 1600 ; Top-plate dials indistinguishable by touch (most problematic when using EVF) ; Mystifying default control setup (e.g. easier to change JPEG...

The NEX-7 packs an awful lot of features into its small body, including an excellent 24MP APS-C sensor and large high resolution electronic viewfinder. Its three dial interface and extensive customizability makes for excellent handling, although its...

Sony NEX-7 Review

The Sony NEX-7 is a new compact system camera, the fifth model in the NEX series, that's aimed squarely at enthusiasts. Featuring the same 24.3 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor as the A77 and A65 SLT cameras, the NEX-7 has an eye-level XGA OLED...

Sony Alpha NEX-7

The top of the line Sony NEX-7 is a compact system camera that offers enthusiasts excellent control over camera settings, as well as a built-in high-resolution electronic viewfinder. The biggest news, though, is the 24.3 megapixel APS-C sensor that...

24.3-megapixel sensor with excellent image quality; Small body; Exceptional user interface; Full HD 60p video; Electronic viewfinder and flash are built-in

No Mode dial; Flash sync is a touch slow; No UHS-I card support; Needs a better kit lens to match the sensor quality

Back when we first saw the original Sony NEX-5, we knew Sony had something big on their hands. When we posted our review of the NEX-5, WOW, were we ever right: The NEX-5 was the most popular camera on the entire IR site for months on end.
