Sony brings 30x zoom to your smartphone (sort of) with QX30 lens camera

At IFA 2014, Sony announced a second round of its lens-style QX-series cameras that use your smartphone's screen for their viewfinder and controls.

Sony DSC-QX30

Sony has announced two new "lens-style" cameras, which are simply lenses with built-in image sensors, yet no standard display. Instead, you download the PlayMemories App to any iOS or Android smartphone to use the camera as your display where you can...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-QX30 Review

The Cyber-shot DSC-QX30 is another camera from Sony which fits into the “lens camera” category of the company's compact camera line-up. It doesn't include a screen, or a standard grip as you might find on an ordinary camera, looking more like a camera...

Once again, Sony has produced something which is capable of producing some excellent images, but it has a unique set of quirks when it comes to usability that you only get with QX cameras.

Sony QX30 Review

In late 2013, Sony revealed two new cameras unlike anything that had gone before. Both were completely reliant on a smartphone for framing, image review, and all control other than image capture and zoom. Of the pair, the Sony QX10 offered the more...

Available from September 2014, the Sony QX30 is priced at around US$350, about US$100 less than the standalone HX50V camera with which it shares many features.

Sony QX30 review

30x optical zoom for your phone... well, sort of

30x optical zoom ; NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity

No screen ; Relies on smart device battery life ; Connectivity issues

A 30x optical zoom to use with your smartphone sounds like a good idea in theory, but in practice it can be frustrating.

Sony Cyber-Shot QX30 Review

The Sony Cyber-shot QX30 is a "Smart Lens" that adds a 30x optical zoom lens to your smartphone or tablet.

Adds 30x optical zoom lens to your smartphone or tablet ; Optical Image Stabilisation ; Built-in tripod socket ; Wi-Fi and NFC ; MicroUSB charging ; Good macro performance

Quite large ; Doesn't add a flash, for that you need the ; QX1 ; No filters, scene modes or panoramic shooting modes

The Sony Cyber-shot QX30 is an easy way to add a 30x optical zoom lens camera to a smartphone, although for roughly the same price, you could get the Sony Cyber-shot WX500 , which offers a 30x optical zoom lens, a built in screen, and Wi-Fi so that you...

Nice idea but too fiddly for spontaneous shots

This camera is good for taking shots where there is plenty of time to get it rigged up. The processes involved mean that quick shots are a bit of a faff: 1. Attach camera to phone, 2. Enter phone PIN, 3. Open app, 4. Switch camera on so it connects to...

Can't use it for what I wanted but a great device

I wanted to use it with an app we've developed but because it uses it's own wifi to connect to the android or apple device, I couldn't then use the local wifi to transfer the images... such a shame but not something that should effect anyone else so...
