Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 reviewed

If you've been waiting to see whether Sony's 10-megapixel, $1,000 DSC-R1 would emerge as a competitor for DSLRs, well, you can stop waiting. PC Magazine has reviewed the high-end EVF, and has declared it to be only fair. Sure, the reviewer liked the...

Sony Cybershot DSC-R1 Camera

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 is an expensive and unique hybrid camera. The $999 model has features that are common among advanced cameras: a fixed-lens design, and the ability to frame images on its pop-up, twisting 2-inch LCD or through its electronic...

Top-notch image quality

Autofocus is unpredictable Zoom range is limited

Using the joystick and wheel to navigate the menus was easy. Occasionally, I found the menu design annoying, however: Menus for changing the megapixel resolution, picture quality, ISO, and compression type (RAW or normal) were separate from many other...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1

This unique camera offers great image quality and some SLR-like features, but its zoom is limited.

For people who can live without changing lenses, Sony's DSC-R1 makes a versatile alternative to an SLR--but you'll have to pay an SLR-scale price for it.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 Review

In August 2003 Sony revealed the latest in a long line of split body swivel design prosumer digital cameras, the eight megapixel DSC-F828. Two long years have passed and it's time for the new Sony prosumer digital camera; the unique and radical...

Superb 24 - 120 mm F2.8 - F4.8 lens is worth the $999 alone Good resolution, a slight advantage over the EOS 350D (not as much as we would like) Vivid, 'pleasing' color response, although may not be to everyone's taste Low noise levels up to ISO 400,...

In-camera image processor not making most of captured data (demosaicing, sharpening) Odd LCD location either difficult to get used to or a serious limitation (user dependent) Electronic Viewfinder is no substitute for an optical TTL viewfinder...

I'll start as I shall no doubt finish this little piece of editorial, the lens is worth the price of the DSC-R1 alone. That fact is not to be underestimated, it's a great lens which provides you with a very useful 24 - 120 mm zoom range (which will be...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1

The 10.3MP Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 has a lot to offer, but not enough to justify such a high price.

Excellent picture quality. Lots of external controls and options. Wide-angle end of the zoom gives you a wide 24mm view.

Very expensive. Quite heavy and bulky. Slow performance. No video capabilities.

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-R1 review

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-R1

Excellent image quality; an impressively flexible LCD screen that's viewable from many angles; a sharp Zeiss lens; effective white-balancing features; a wide range of ISO sensitivity; quick performance.

With most heavy components on the left side, the chunky body is somewhat off-balance; can't shoot raw in burst mode; the in-camera review function magnifies to only 5X.

If you don't anticipate a need for multiple lenses--which many users won't, given the crisp 24mm-to-120mm-equivalent lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8--the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-R1 makes a worthy competitor to the dSLRs in its price range. It's a...

Sony Cybershot DSC R1 review

The fact that Sony introduced the Cybershot DSC R1 should without a doubt be noted as both surprising and remarkable. Not only was a new Cybershot digital camera about to see the light of day, it is a camera that comes equipped with an entirely new...

Let it be clear that the Sony Cybershot DSC-R1 is an extraordinary camera indeed. This doesn't just limit itself to the design, but also covers the optics. The fact that the Sony R1 is equipped with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens greatly attributes...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-R1 Digital Camera Review: Overview and Highlights

Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-R1 is one of the latest in the long (and incredibly broad) line of digital cameras that reflects Sony's commanding position in the digital camera marketplace. The Sony R1 (considerably) extends the high range of the Cyber-shot...

(Almost) APS-C sized sensor in an all-in-one digital camera gives very good image noise levels, High 10.3 megapixel resolution, Very appealing tonality and color, Really excellent optical quality from the 24-120mm lens, Wider-angle zoom range than all...

Default in-camera sharpening leaves fine detail a little coarse looking, Limited buffer depth cuts short continuous shooting, Single-shot cycle time is slower than most digital SLRs, Shutter lag in AF mode is only average, not up to the levels of...
