DCRP gets hands on with the Sony DSC-T9

For those of you who keep track of these things, Sony is up to the seventh model in their T-series line of slim-bodied subcompact cameras in under two years, with the six megapixel DSC-T9 about to join the ranks of the T1, T11, T3, T33, T5, and T7....

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T9

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T9 is a super-thin stylish 6MP digital camera that will be sure to get you noticed in a crowd.

2.5-inch LCD. Very sleek and stylish. Very good picture quality.

Lens distortion. Slightly confusing menus. Pricey.

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T9 review

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-T9

Excellent design, portability, and build quality; decent photo quality; very quick performance; optical image stabilization; 58MB of internal memory.

Lens is slow and not very wide at f/3.5 and 38mm; excessive red-eye.

Sony's new Cyber Shot DSC-T9 is a beautiful, highly pocketable camera that's fast and easy to use and has good image quality, to boot.

Digital Cameras - Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T9 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

Ultra-slim form factor, literally shirt-pocket sized, Excellent build and good heft, Rich feature set for a subcompact, Optical Image Stabilization, very unusual in a camera as small as the T9, Excellent shutter response, much faster than average...

A good lens, but pincushion distortion is higher than average, No grip to speak of, No charging dock included, Must remove battery to charge, Special, proprietary cable required to offload images, Pro Duo card format is expensive, No full manual mode,...

The Sony T9 zooms over the equivalent of a 38-114mm range, fairly typical for its class. Though a little soft at wide angle, with some mild coma distortion in the trees, the T9's lens still performs well, and the camera's sharpening algorithms seem to...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T9

The other features on the T9 are more run-of-the-mill: a 6 Megapixel CCD, 2.5" LCD display, AF-assist lamp, and VGA movie mode

Stylish, ultra-thin metal body ; Optical image stabilizer ; Very good photo quality ; Impressive high ISO performance for a compact camera ; Snappy performance ; Large, high resolution LCD display; visible in bright outdoor light and dim indoor light ;...

Redeye ; No manual controls; custom white balance and long shutter speed modes needed ; Annoying sliding lens cover ; No optical viewfinder ; Flash, while better than before, is on the weak side ; Flimsy cover over memory card / battery compartment ;...

While it's not perfect, the DSC-T9 is a nice improvement over Sony's earlier T-series models, and it gets my recommendation. The competition is tough in the ultra-thin category though, so check the competition carefully before you buy!

Sony Cyber-shot DSCT9

The six-megapixel Cyber-shot DSCT9 distinguishes itself by providing practical features most casual photographers will be sure to appreciate.

These days the battle between digital snapshot camera manufacturers seems to be less about picture quality and more about design and features. With all the major players now offering high megapixel cameras in compact sizes with more or less similar...

Sony Cyber-Shot T9

The T9 is the first T-series Sony Cyber-shot to feature optical image stabilization. It also feature some very familiar ultra-thin camera "standard" features such as 6 megapixels, a 2.5 inch LCD and an internal zoom lens. In addition, the Sony T9 has...

Good battery life ; Optical image stabilizer ; High-resolution 2.5 inch LCD ; 1 cm macro mode ; Usable high ISO (Even at ISO 640) ; Unlimited VGA 30 FPS movie mode ; Average image quality

No manual controls (at all!) ; Slow and limited continuous shooting ; Performance could be faster and better ; Weak flash ; Redeye and some corner softness

The Sony Cyber-shot T9 features a 6 megapixel CCD, 3x zoom lens, 2.5 inch LCD, optical image stabilization and high sensitivity mode.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T9

Sony's ultra thin and ultra stylish T series Cyber-shot is back with the 6-megapixel DSCT9.

Extremely compact. Attractive streamlined design. Better image quality than predecessors. 58MB internal memory. Background music to accompany slideshows.

Sliding lens cover automatically turns camera on when opened. Narrow lens. Excessive red eye and unnatural skin tones. Limited manual controls.

Adding image stabilisation and a sound-enriched slideshow function to its T series, Sony's DSC-T9 is a slick snapshot that's sure to please.
