Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230

Sony's $200 Cyber-shot DSC-W230 point-and-shoot delivers a high-end feature set—and unimpressive pictures—at a low-end price.

Large LCD. Low noise up to ISO 800. Fast. Easy-to-use. Affordable.

Major sharpness problems at image edges. LCD shows considerable motion blur.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230 Point-and-Shoot Review

Excellent 3-inch LCD screen ; Fun UI and slideshow features

Image stabilization not always effective ; Proprietary USB connector

The slick DSC-W230 has a great LCD and neat in-camera features, but its image quality and stabilization could be better.

Review: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230 digital camera

This slick Cyber-shot has a great LCD, neat in-camera features, and a wide-angle lens, but image quality and stabilization could be better.

The 12-megapixel DSC-W230 is well-constructed and looks sharp, too. It’s available in four colors: blue, black, red, and silver. Its 4X optical-zoom Carl Zeiss lens offers a 30mm film equivalent on the wide-angle end, with 120mm on the telephoto end

Intuitive and beginner-friendly interface, plus-sized LCD display, 30mm wide angle lens

Not as slim as other compacts on the market, underpowered flash

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230 is an impressive compact camera that is especially suited to beginners. It takes good photos, comes with an enlarged LCD and has one of the best user interfaces we've seen. All in all, a solid effort.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230

At a reasonably low price for budget shoppers, the W230 has quite a few nice features. Unfortunately, the camera has a lens that is not too sturdy, below par image quality and a battery life that will disappoint.

Easy mode is fuss free ; Flash has a good range ; Exposure bracketing

Buttons are too small ; Battery life ; Images displayed a fair amount of noise and colour artefacts ; Flimsy lens ; Smile shutter was too slow to respond and fussy

At a reasonably low price for budget shoppers, the W230 has quite a few nice features. Unfortunately, the camera has a none too sturdy lens, below par image quality and a battery life that will disappoint.

All in all, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W230 offers a great bundle of features for the price, as well as a great LCD and a wide-angle lens. It's one of the best point-and-shoots at this price level we've seen so far in 2009, even if it offers a bit less...
