Sony's compact DSC-W50 Cyber-shot reviewed

The Cyber-shot DSC-W50 is a decently priced 6 megapixel shooter from Sony with claims to higher light sensitivity and not a lot else to brag about, at least on paper. DCRP has put the camera through its paces, and they find it a fine camera for ...

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W50 review

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W50

Compact; easy operation; decent image quality.

Feels flimsy; noisy at high ISO; few scene modes or manual controls.

It's not very flexible, and it's not for low light shots, but the Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W50 is still a solid ultracompact camera.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W50 Digital Camera - Full Review - The Imaging Resource!

Thin and ultra-compact, the new Sony DSC-W50 digital camera (and its sibling the W30 model) updates the Cyber-shot line with convenient portability and fully automatic exposure control in a compact, rugged metal case. The W50 offers the excellent...

Fast, excellent shutter response, excellent shot to shot speed

Macro mode shows severe curvature of field/blurry corners, So-so handling of household incandescent lighting, A tendency toward slight warm casts in many shots, No custom/manual white balance option

Though the LCD monitor dominates the rear panel, Sony managed to keep all the main functions close at hand and fairly easy to operate. Grab the Sony W50 in your right hand and your middle and third finger naturally grab the raised ridge on the front of...

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W50 ($249) is a compact 6 Megapixel camera with a 3X optical zoom lens, 2.5" LCD display, VGA movie mode, and point-and-shoot operations. One of the other big features on the W50 is its high sensitivity mode, which can boost the...

Very good photo quality in most situations (though see issues below), Low noise levels for its class through ISO 400, Compact, stylish body comes in silver and black, Snappy performance, Large 2.5" LCD display (though resolution could be better),...

Color saturation changes at ISO 800 and 1000; noise levels limit you to small, mediocre quality prints at those settings, Redeye, Focusing can be slow at telephoto end of lens or in low light, Unimpressive continuous shooting mode, No manual controls;...

Sony Cyber-Shot W50

The ultra-compact Sony Cyber-shot W50 is has 6 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, a large 2.5 inch LCD and ISO 1000 capabilities. Sony has come up with a compact camera capable of taking photos at high sensitivities. So how will things turn up? Will I like...

Large 2.5 inch LCD ; Excellent battery life ; Conversion lens compatibility ; Flash control is better than most ; Gets very close with 2 cm macro mode ; Great high ISO performance (Even ISO 1000 shots are acceptable) ; Unlimited VGA 30 FPS movie mode ;...

LCD visibility and resolution not excellent ; Zoom lever is too easy to bump ; No manual controls ; Slow and limited continuous shooting ; Performance could be faster and better ; Redeye ; Memory Sticks can be costly

The Sony Cyber-shot W50 takes most of the W5's features and puts them into a smaller package. The W50 is about 10% smaller than the W5 yet features a 6 megapixel CCD, 3x zoom lens with the same specifications, excellent battery life and can still...

Sony Cybershot DSC-W50

The Sony DSC-W50 - a slightly upgraded version of the Sony DSC-W30 - exhibits strong performance and is an excellent camera for day-to-day photography...

Nice pictures, ISO 1000

Poor burst mode

The W50 is a great camera, with good performance very similar to the W30, but with a slightly larger LCD display.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W50

It's not very flexible, and it's not for low light shots, but the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W50 is still a solid ultracompact camera.

Compact ; Easy operation ; Decent image quality

Feels flimsy ; Noisy at high ISO ; Few scene modes or manual controls

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W50 is a decent ultracompact digital camera that makes up for its lack of controls with its solid performance and image quality. Its high sensitivity can give you passable low-light shots if you can get past the noise, and its...
