Sony's 7.2 megapixel Cybershot DSC-W70 reviewed

Wasn't it just a few years ago that $300 wouldn't buy you much of a digital camera? How times have changed, because these days, you can not only score a compact 7.2 megapixel model for under three C-notes, but a good one at that -- especially if it's...

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W70

Can take very good photos in sufficient light; compact; easy to use; decent performance.

Photos display processing artifacts in shadow areas; above-average noise at ISO 200 and higher.

The ultracompact Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W70 is a competent snapshooter, but its cheaper, lower-resolution siblings, the DSC-W30 and DSC-W50, are better values.

Sony rounds out the 2006 W-series line of digital still cameras with two top-end models packed with powerful features -- the 8-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-W100 and the 7-megapixel DSC-W70. Both cameras are equipped with an eye-level viewfinder and a large...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W70 Digital Camera - Full Review - The Imaging Resource!

Thin and ultra-compact, the new Sony DSC-W70 digital camera (and its siblings the W30 and W50 models) updates the Cyber-shot line with convenient portability and fully automatic exposure control in a compact, rugged metal case. The W70 offers the...

Fast, excellent shutter response, excellent shot to shot speed ; Fast startup/shutdown time ; Good color accuracy ; Very capable movie mode ; Very fast multi-burst (reduced resolution) mode, great for analyzing golf/tennis swings ; LCD is usable in...

Macro mode shows significant curvature of field/blurry corners ; So-so handling of household incandescent lighting ; A tendency toward slight warm casts in many shots ; No custom/manual white balance option ; Slightly limited low-light capability ;...

Though the LCD monitor dominates the rear panel, Sony managed to keep all the main functions close at hand and fairly easy to operate. Grab the Sony W70 in your right hand and your middle and third finger naturally grab the raised ridge on the front of...

Sony Cybershot W70 Review

There is not much to say about the Sony Cybershot DSC-W70. It is a fairly typical ultra-compact camera, with no manual controls, not even custom white-balance. Image quality is about average, with less noise but less accurate white-balance.

Mostly good lens sharpness, Fast and responsive, Good LCD visibility, Great battery life

Softening of details above ISO 200, Above average pincushion distortion, Corner softness, more pronounced near telephoto, Strong corner blur and distortion in macro mode

Sony Cyber-Shot W70

It's another one of Sony's new W-series cameras of 2006 - The Cyber-shot W70. The W70 features 7 megapixels, a 2.5 inch LCD, 2 cm macro and high ISO capabilities. I found the W50 a great camera but is the W70 an upgrade worthy of the extra $50? How...

Large 2.5 inch LCD ; Expandable with conversion lenses and filters ; Above average battery life ; Powerful flash with good control (especially with closeups) ; Very close 2 cm macro mode ; Good - not great - high ISO performance (Acceptable up to ISO...

LCD visibility and resolution not excellent ; No manual controls ; No ISO 80 option on my camera ; Slow and limited continuous shooting ; Lens retracts too soon in playback mode ; Performance could be faster and better ; Redeye ; Movie mode is very...

The Sony Cyber-shot W70 takes all the features of the W50: a 2.5 inch LCD, high sensitivity mode and great battery life, and tosses in 7 megapixels.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W70 Digital Camera Review

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W70 is an excellent, very compact performer.

Easy access to shooting modes (just change the dial, no digging in menus) ; Good indoor performance with flash ; Awesome battery life ; Good LCD

Controls a bit tiny (in my opinion) ; High rates of noise in shots taken with a sensitivity setting over ISO 200

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W70 is a stylish, compact camera that takes great pictures. With its 7.2 megapixels, you get plenty of resolution even if you have to crop out some bad areas of your image. The 3x optical zoom is pretty standard these days, but...
