Sony E 30mm F3.5 Macro

The Sony E 30mm F3.5 Macro is an affordable, lightweight macro lens. It focuses really close, but be wary of its short working distance.

Light and compact. 1:1 macro capture. Crisp optics. No distortion. Affordable.

Very close working distance for 1:1 magnification. Edge resolution disappoints. Omits weather protection and stabilization.

Bottom Line: The Sony E 30mm F3.5 Macro is an affordable, lightweight macro lens. It focuses really close, but be wary of its short working distance.

Sony 100mm F2.8 Macro

Sony's 100mm f/2.8 Macro lens is a sharp optic that captures objects at full life-size, but it's often slow when used with autofocus.

Quite sharp when stopped down. 1:1 magnification. Nominal distortion. Focus limiter feature.

Somewhat slow, noisy screw-drive autofocus. Edges soft at wide apertures. Not sealed against moisture and dust.

The Sony 100mm F2.8 Macro is showing its age, but still delivers crisp images, especially at the narrower apertures you typically use for macro photography. But a screw-drive focus system and telescoping design aren't something you expect from a modern...

Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Standard Zoom

The Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Standard Zoom is a solid starter lens when bundled with the a camera, but it's priced a bit too high when purchased separately.

Good center sharpness. Optically stabilized. Solid build quality. Includes lens hood.

Noticeable distortion. Weak edge performance. Narrow aperture.

Your choice of kit lens for your E-mount camera comes down to which you value more—absolute sharpness, or a compact design. Both the 18-55mm and 16-50mm are optically stabilized, and even though we found that the 16-50mm isn't quite the performer, we...

Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM II

The Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM II is better than the older version of the lens, but it still suffers compared to other 18-55mm kit zooms.

Sharp at widest angle. Light. Compact. Internal focus motor.

Front element rotates during focus. Sharpness suffers as you zoom. Edges are never that sharp. Plastic lens mount.

If you're after a longer zoom range, and don't want to spend a ton of money on a lens, consider the Sony 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6. It's priced around $500, but can be had for less when bundled with a new body, and is a solid performer. You're not likely to...

Sony 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens

Sony's 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens is a sharp optic that allows for extremely close focus, but is often slow when used with autofocus.

Very sharp. 1:1 magnification. Focus limiter feature.

Somewhat slow, noisy autofocus.

Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens

Sony's DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom is the starter lens bundled with many Sony D-SLRs, and in that context, it's not bad. But buying this lens its own doesn't make a lick of sense.

Lightweight. Internal focus motor.

Soft images. Distortion. Rotating front element. Plastic mount.
